My son started collecting these and we have a couple of questions; First, is it better to keep the mint rolls intact or open them and check the coins out ? I say open them up. lol The second is, how do we know which mint they are from without opening the rolls ? He's been getting them at local banks and credit unions and we don't know how to tell which mint they are from. Thanks, gary
Depends, Are you wanting to keep them on the off chance that later they will be worth a fantastic amount of money in a roll? And is it worth tying up your 25.00/roll to do so? I think you just have to look, but mostly, if you are in an area that is serviced by Denver, that is what you probably have. If Philadelphia, then that. But still no guarantees. If you're in the middle of the country and get both mints equally, then it's a toss up. I kept a number of rolls for a couple years, then decided I didn't want to have the rolls, so I opened them up, took a few I liked best, then put the rest into circulation.
Kasia makes a good point Gary. Most of the rolls I get around here contain no "D" coins as I reside in the jungles of Long Island. I'd imagine that most your son would have would be Denver as you folks live in the western part of this great nation of ours. The only way to be sure of getting a solid "P" or "D" is to order them directly from the Mint. Cost ineffective, I know, but I'm a "coin junky"..........
Thank you both. that should answer his questions. I never gave these coins a sceond thought except to look for an error. Every roll I got I dumped. I had no idea he would an to start a collection of them. I gave him what ones I had, set him up with binder pages and got him enough flips to get a good start. Now getting answers to his questions. lol I hope his interest grows to the point he can help manage what junk I leave behind. LOL gary
Fully agree with this comment. Get a Dansco, crack the rolls, find the best, put 'em in the Dansco, and he'll have extra (whatever doesnt wind up in the Dansco) $$ to buy REAL coins with. Even then, he'd still have a real fake leather piggy-bank, as face value is all these will ever be worth (with the exception of the pop 1 top pops....but sooooo many were minted, the pops are too subject to changing).
Mint Rolls If its a "mint" roll, it will say it out the outside of the wrapper. I buy one mint roll of each type from the us mint, and each one says on the wrapper D or P. If you are buying the circulated rolls, I don't know. I buy the uncirculated rolls. If its circulated rolls, crack them open...some people like to keep the uncirculated rolls in tact, but I like taking one out to put in my album. It's all up to what you want to do really.
Hey Gary, I collect the rolls as well, I'm in the Philly vicinity so the rolls I get are at face value and are always Philadelphia mint. I get 1 extra roll and open it to see if it is in fact "P" then mark the rolls I got with it as "P" on the wrapper. Spend the open roll or gift them individually. The box the bank pulls from should/may indicate the mint which they came from as well. Many people trade "P"s for "D"s as well and set up relationships to ship one another the needed mint marked rolls. ME being one of those individuals. Keep them in the roll I say, for long term storage. I do 2 rolls of each Presidential Dollar in each mint mark, $100 total investment for each release. If it comes down to it just spend them if you need the $$$. Or, ebay is pretty good now too for selling.
I buy two rolls from the bank per president and crack one open to see the mint, look for one for my Dansco and trade one for the other mint. I figure the other one will be the same. I have one roll of (uncirculated) $25 for each president. Why? I'm not sure other than it is not costing me anything (it wouldn't be earning much interest in a bank nowadays). The rolls the mint sells have the mint identified on the wrapper. I figure that if you get an uncirc roll from each president, you could sell them for a premium on ebay (best case scenario), or spend them and not loose anything. So, I say save em....
Guys, I passed all this information on to my son. I also suggested he join this forum and discuss this with a few possible trading partners directly. Not that I mind being an intermediary, but things often get lost when I translate them. I am glad he's taking an interest more than anything. We all have a series we like better than any of the others. My favorite set is the Mercuries, followed by the Washingtons. So I'm glad he has a series to work on too. Thanks everyone, gary
If these are in rolls acquired from a bank for face value, open them and roll search for errors, highend unc. ones. If they're in the Mint rolls ordered from the Mint at the mark up price for a P and D roll, keep them in the rolls.
howdy everyone I am the son collecting the rolls. Saturday I bought 10 rolls at the Wells Fargo Bank. I got 7 of the NF Strings rolls of Various Presidents (Monroe, Jackson, JQA, Van Buren, Tippicanoe, Tyler) and then 3 mint rolls of Fillmore, Pierce and Buchanan. Now the question I have is on the Mint Rolls, Did the mint change the color of the wrappers or wrapper design for each set?
You may need to post pictures of the rolls and we can tell you with clarity. The N.F. String rolls should be white with blue print, black for presidents name and red lines on the ends. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-P-James-Madison-Dollar-BU-25-Roll-/130478679933 The Mint rolls look like this: http://news.coinupdate.com/us-mint-releases-millard-fillmore-dollar-offers-coin-rolls-0156/ or this http://www.coincollectingnews.org/rutherford-b-hayes-presidential-dollar-rolls/1015739
I'm surprised you were able to get that many rolls and the variety!!! WOW Good job. The mint rolls should have a "P" or "D" to exemplify where they were struck.
The mint rolls came in that pic like you posted of the Fillmore roll. On the US Mint Website it shows the rolls for Johnson-Garfield being like this: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...1&parent_category_rn=16238&top_category=16238 and the Fillmore, Pierce and Buchanan roll were like this : http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=14952&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=37238
Thats pretty good as those you've listed are FROM THE MINT and not rolled at a secondary source out of bulk quantities.
the rolls I have been buying from the bank have been like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2010-P-Jame...92?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item519ad28590
The N.F. String rolls were taken from original bank rolls and re-wrapped in the wrappers with the N.F. String name printed on them. The original collector rolls from the Mint's catalog are in the same wrapper they've used for these dollars since they were released.
