This presentation is not about a particular engraver, but about the process and various collateral items generated in the creation and printing of a French banknote. I hope you enjoy it. Most is on the web page, you should just click here if you're going to read it. The Creation of a French Banknote It is quite a project to create finished banknotes, ready for distribution. I have laid out the general steps involved, from artist's sketches through to finished product, with examples (where I have them!) at various stages of the process. Read on! Dave
DaveM... What a nice read on the production of the Banknotes! Great layout and very well presented. When they talk about the potentials for errors entering the general circulation do you buy chance know the populations of French errors per denomination? Excellent presentation, I really enjoyed it!!:thumb: RickieB
Wonderfully done and very interesting. The overlay note to illustrate reuse is super. I watched it change 6 or six times just for the enjoyment of it.
Thank you Art and Ricky! I do not have census numbers for errors on French notes. I do get quite a few auction catalogs and can say that significant (sellable) errors seem to be quite rare and expensive - enough that I haven't had an interest in plunking down the bucks for any. Whether the ratio is higher or lower that that of US notes, I wouldn't know. Other than to say that with all the color in French notes (4-color press since 1906, intaglio passes printed on top of relief prints), one can certainly find minor problems with registration between colors quite commonly. The Victoire note I use in the article, and below, for example, one might argue there are some serious registration problems. This is common, but not an error I'd think. Dave
Dave, what a nice presentation showing the differences in engraving and printing methods used by other countries then what I'm used to Intaglio (US) Banknotes . I learned something new today ,France uses multi-embossing & intaglio printing and lithography.Very informative & nicely layed out presentation. Excellent Presentation, connor
Brilliant. Well done. Thank you for such a through web presentation. Loved the 'reuse' animation too.
Great presentation Dave. I enjoyed the overview of the process and great examples provided. I enjoy the aspect of learning more about the steps taken to get from concept to finished product. Thanks for the effort to provide a presentation on an open date! Best Regards ~ Darryl
Loved this! You spent some real time doing the layout on it. It really gives a feel for the artistic differences between French and U.S. banknote style. The French are big on color -- too bad we don't see more of that in most classic U.S. notes.
Thanks gsa, it looks like you did some serious reading over the last 24 hours! As you can imagine, I'm just as hooked on the French stuff as many folks are on US. Dave
Excellent presentation! I've always been fascinated by French bills (I have a few in my collection) and to read about their productions techniques explains why they look so different from other countries' currency. Well done!
