I brought this this a coin shop and i was told that someone took the date off. That it wasn’t a mint error. Just double checking on here.

hard to tell with a distance, out of focus image. But I think I see tooling marks (someone scrapped the date off) in the entire date area in a triangular (pizza wedge shaped) section between the two rim dents.

Hard to tell, but if you take a picture up close- we can then tell if it is a genuine struck through grease, or an altered coin.

Either deliberately or accidentally done. An accident would be a grease filled Die at the Mint and that would be an error. These types of errors are extremely common and bring no extra value. On the other hand if it was deliberately done, then it's damaged and that isn't worth more than face value.

It's a really strange way of saying that either way it's worth nothing... I tend to disagree if you have struck through grease error that results in the complete removal of a date it is an oddity maybe not an extremely valuable one but certainly worth more than face value.

Greasers are very common yes, but to most of us when talking about something like this, it's not just that something has been removed it is what has been removed and to what degree was the particular device removed. In the case of a struck through date... Heck it's just this kind of error that got some of us into collecting in the first place. I'm definitely not qualified tell the owner of the coin above whether it's legit or not, but I and say that if it is real then it's not a Spender.

This is the forever penny. We will forever never know it's true date of issue and how the date was exactly removed.

You could be right , but a positive ID may be possible. I'm sure that if you are able to get a USB microscope or a hand lens and a fix it somehow to your cell phone camera , you can get some crisp , close up pictures of the devices which could lead to a positive identification of the date... or if not the exact date and mintage, at least an approximate range. Not really...you posted this in the "Error" forum, not the "What's It Worth" forum. Either way, it's still "worth" nothing (more than 1 cent), but those are two viable possibilities for this specimen.

I take it this is your opinion. Don't tend to disagree. Unless you can find someone willing to buy this for a premium, it's only worth 1 cent (unless you sell it on Etsy, then you can ask & probably sell it for much more ). No one with coin knowledge (read: most CT members) would pay extra for something rather common or intentionally damaged (OK, maybe for love tokens or other intentionally carved coins). No, not "certainly worth more"...

"...and to what degree"??? No, not to what degree...it is or it isn't. Don't make stuff up.

Yeah, let us know when you find someone who says: "Oh, I don't need an exact date, if you can narrow it down to a 10 year bracket, that's OK."

If you find such a person, we have a boat load of Buffalo nickel stackers who have some hoards....:joyful::joyful::joyful:

Igor...you said you "bought" this penny so good for you for paying for something you personally like. Please post some close ups so the talented eyes here can determine if its a greaser/legit mint issue or someone thats handy with a dremmel and too much time on their hands.

Yes, a penny with no date is almost intriguing. Much like when I was a little kid listening to a story being told over the radio every so often about a horse with no name. That was always a very intriguing story for me to listen to. This penny with no date must feel just like the horse does, that has no name.
