Panda Gold coin vs US Gold Eagle - If our dollar is declining which is better to own? Is there better ones then aforementioned (Kruger, Canadian or ----)? I am also interested in .9999 silver coins. ALL COINS would be NON-numismatic. Any ideas for these troubling times? Jeff

Might depend on where you are located, but I stay away from Pandas because the first silver one I bought turned out to be a fake. When I started researching them, I concluded that they are by far the most counterfeited of the major bullion coins.

Part of the problem that our dollar is declining is our lopsided trade agreements with china. Also, buying anything from china is like giving steroids to the bull thats gonna kick our edited. Think American buy American. Plus the fact that they counterfeit collector coins and thats enough for me to never own the pandas. Vote with your money.

Pandas, fuzzy little creatures, I know little about. US bullion? That's guaranteed and safe. Don't trust nothin' emanating from the mainland o' China. 'les, of course, I bought it in the form of a piece of furniture purchased from our friends at Walmart. I can trust that, even if the assembly instructions are sadly lacking...

Just got back from a walk and I wanted to add a few things. I know some pandas can have high premiums (premiums chinese pay with dollars they are earning from our markets) and there are some dealers that cater to the market, but I don't have the stomach for it. When my time is up I pray I will see my Family, Neighbors and this Country more or less intact, God willing. And they will find coins with LIBERTY and EAGLES on them, not some wussy punk junk slabbed pandas. We inherited a beautiful country from some strong people my friend and we just cant give it away. I recomend buying gold from any freedom loving nation.

Understandable, and well put..in these times.
Politics aside, those "wussy punk junk slabbed pandas" are absolutely b e a u t i f u l, in my book. Personally, I'd like one of every single one minted, but only have 2. Maybe not for investment purposes, but to look at.. (and to hold:))

If you are in the US and want to turn buying bullion into a patriotic political statement, then by all means buy the Eagle pieces. Other than that, one ounce of gold or silver is one ounce of gold or silver. :) This also means, however, that any premium you may pay on a specific bullion issue because of its beauty might get "lost" one day. The intrinsic value will stay ...

According to Wikipedia, the American Eagles contains slightly more gold than the Chinese pandas.

    American Eagle Weight: 33.930g http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gold_Eagle
    Chinese Panda Weight: 31.103g http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Gold_Panda

The Chinese coin is a solid troy ounce, but the American coin is slightly over a troy ounce. The more you know. :D Even aside from all the politics surrounding the issue I'd go for the Eagle, definitely.

Edit: Oh wow, just realized I super-necro-posted. My bad. ._.

Angel - both coins contain exactly the same amount of pure gold. The reason the Eagle weighs more is because it is not made of pure gold but alloyed gold.

To the OP - since you specify non-numismatic coins there is no reason to buy coins at all. Buy hallmarked bullion in the form of bars instead and save money.

The idea that the value of the metal is intrinsic value, IMO, is positively INCORRECT. Pork Bellys and Corn, maybe. Oil, without much doubt. Useless pretty gold :( ... not so much.
