I saw this video and thought I would share it here, I know allot of people are in to buying 1 OZ GOLD bars so if this is you and you like the pamp bars this video is for you.
Interesting video - external packaging is pretty much spot on, but the density of the metal gives the game away. Given the price differential between platinum and gold - a gold plated platinum fake would largely eliminate this, and still return a profit. Given that change - I wonder how many of those are circulating?
A platinum core wouldn't yield nearly as much profit as a tungsten core. There are tungsten-core fake AGEs out there, and a gold bar would be even easier to fake. Besides, platinum is about 10% denser than gold, so the bar would end up either heavier or thinner than a genuine one! Tungsten's density is almost an exact match. XRF guns will have a hard time penetrating a thick layer of gold. This is one situation where I'd expect an electromagnetic scanner (like Sigma) to be more useful. I'm guessing it would be possible to produce a fake gold bar that would pass Sigma, but I wouldn't know how.
Yeah those Pamp Suisse have had fakes for a number of years, there's way better places than ebay to buy below spot for sure! I can't even imagine people who buy gold bars on ebay and just go on their merry way without even having them tested! The guy in the video said there was already around 7 buyers who left that seller positive feedback after buying fake bars, hope they have better luck elsewhere!
Thats why you have to be knowledgable about what you buy, the guy in the video really knows his stuff, even though the scan comes back as not recognized, I am not sure how many people check, they just assume that its real, and thats an expensive mistake !
