okay so i have been collecting ww2 items that led me into collecting coins from the same era. along with those are the third reich coins. now i have been building a nice little collection and found some that seem to 'look' nicer than some of the others ive acquired. upon arrival of this coin i was immediately suspicious starting with the lack of detail in the eagles face. i pulled it out of the 2x2 and the eagle feels almost flat also looks to have intentional nicks in the rim and appears to be "rubbed" to possibly not look so hot off the press. also on the reverse that back ground looks to be a bit porous as compared to others i have. maybe im crazy or paraniod but id like some other opinions. thanks click images to magnify. here is the seller's listing. dosent appear to be the same coin for starters no nick on the rim by the"U" o the left side. http://www.ebay.com/itm/160748951952?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_500wt_1200
I'm sure it's real. The seller may have sanded the high points on the coin so they appear better/clearer in the photos. I would personally not buy from this seller. He's overemphasizing the Nazi theme. It's kinda tacky. Plus he's using phrases like "rare" and "large" and playing the "mint mark" card. His coins listed go for $.03 to $.25 at coin shops and most of his coins appear to have been polished or sanded for better presentation purposes. One last thing, I believe he's using stock footage for the images on his auction listings and not the image of the real coin up for sale.
I`d say the zinc ones are genuine but details worn/sanded down heres the only nazi coin I own the same as yours, you can see not a lot of white on the details thats cause the zinc coating is still there unlike yours which was purposely worn away. The brass and copper ones he`s selling look polished too.
Not much sense faking a coin worth 15 cents, plus if it was fake, it would have looked much better. The coin indeed looks like the black tarnished zinc was harshly cleaned to reveal details. P.S. US $5.06?! You overpaid $5 for it.
i guess so, from the pic it looked so much better than my others, so i bought 1 to check it out. glad i didnt buy more than that. thaks for your reply.
I will admit it does LOOK a better coin in pictures but it simply isn`t, black on white always looks good but once you get it you notice it. Well you have learned the hard way (I have learned that way too on numerous occasions )
yup, seems like thats how i learn everything lately, hahah. this coin is actually the reason i signed up to the forum so i could learn more. i just knew as soon as i had it in my hand that something was a miss, now im paraniod about buying coins as i am very new to it. i feel like ill have to run them by you guys before i buy, i hope it dosent get annoying. shouldnt last long though im a quick study
The British had a whole team counterfit billions of these, they were going to drop them over Germany to kill Nazis much in the same way you would from the empire state building. The Nazis started closing in on them so they dumped them all at the bottom of a deep lake so they couldn't be recovered & induce eggo wafflation. True story, & no fooling. I read about it here http://www.cointalk.com/t202694/
It's real...these zinc coins were made of very low quality material and as a result are prone to corrosion. That is why you see all the pitting...it's not a sign of a casting. Also, the 1941-A (Berlin) is the most common issue in that series with over 240 million minted, so if you have concerns or simply don't like this example (or seller since he doesn't like returns), one can easily be found elsewhere. IMHO, this coin is overpriced. I collect Third Reich coins and can recommend an excellent dealer if you wish to avoid eBay. If you would like the info, PM me.
I have never heard of this. I have heard of the Germans printing tons of British paper currency with that plan...but not the British.
How could they have expected to kill Allied forces by throwing paper money off the empire state building?
zach was obviously joking. By the way, a cent thrown off the empire state building won't kill anybody. Maybe give them a bruise on their head, but that's the max probably. There's a thing called terminal velocity, plus the coin will tumble and updrafts and air resistance will cause it to fall much much slower. Again, a bruise on your head would be the absolute MOST that could happen, and that's even a stretch.
I agree it's creepy how the seller is overemphasizing the Nazi aspect. He has the SS symbol on there twice. He seems to be appealing to neo-Nazis. Nazi coins have to be the most common coin listed on eBay, and sellers put them in every category to make sure you see them too. I find them in the value bins at the local coin shop all the time, so I wouldn't buy one on eBay unless I needed the mintmark or date.
