OK, Quick question that just goes to show how little I know. What is the difference between the Blue, Purple, Black (and any other colors) US Mint Proof Sets from 70's and 80's. Poked around a little on the Internet and could not find it. Thanks Darryl
I believe the only difference is the year of issue. They changed colors of the packaging on the proof sets a few times....Mike
Plastic of inserts changed a few times also....Playing from memory......Blue Proofs stayed pretty well the same. there are large and small Black boxes (1980-1982 were small) and I think there were two styles of plastic cases in both the large black and the purple series.
The only color on the mint sets are the red and blue edge bands on the pliofilm. And red and blue are the only colors I am aware of. (Sometimes the blue appears blue-green to me but I'm colorblind) One color indicated the Philadeplia coins an the other is for the Denver coins. I don't know which color goes with which mint. Opps, sorry you asked about mint sets in the title and then proof sets in the question. No meaning in the color diferences on the pre 1992 proof sets, then on the post 1991 sets there were two different colors each year, one indicating clad sets and one silver sets.
I never thought of it as colors even when some people use that term on some of the sets . I do know that many sets have dropped a little in the 2008 red book. You can get some real bargains on some pre 70 sets IMO I do not think they will be this low again.
If anyone in here needs help with indenifying the orignal government packing for mint and proof sets from 1950-current just ask me and I'll look my "Bible" "United states Proof Sets and MInt Sets: by Ron Guth and Bill Gale. This book has saved me $$ as I really didn't know what the orignal packaging was supposed to be for the older prrof and mint sets.
What does your Proof & Mint set Bible say about the "never opened" proof sets from the 50's and 60's? I've heard that they came unsealed and then were sealed after looking through them. I also heard that some, over time sealed themselves with moisture, storage and time. There are plenty of these sealed type on ebay.
Here is what my bible says "The warning against buying sealed Proof Sets applies to the 1955 Sets, as well, in either version. Sealed Sets are more likely to contain substituded coins (and even non-coins) than they ere to contain Deep Cameo Proof" I have bought those sealed proof and early mint sets and only had on with a problem, carbon spot on the 50 cent piece in a 1964 mint set. I now buy only open sets, so I can see what I'm buying. If you'll also notice all the empties evelopes for early proof and mint sets for sale on E-Bay, kinda scary.
