So I seen this going through my 1980s Lincoln pennies and this penny with the smaller sharper date was smaller compared to all my other 85's. the darker one shows a noticeable Gap in between the numerals and mint mark compared to the more red one. looks even better under magnification I will reply with pics if needed.
I don't see that they are different sizes. I think that one coin was made with a worn die and the other was made with a new die. Your photos are not cropped to the same ratio:.
1985 is the year the mint mark was no longer hand punched. You may have a hand punched mint mark because they ran out of dies with the mint mark. 1986 Lincoln small cents do have a small and large date variety. Edit: 1985 also saw a change in size of the D mint mark. The D was larger on the 1985 compared to prior years.
That's very interesting I did not know that. I know the photos not cropped as far as even ratio but I was kind of hoping who ever did see this would take the initiative of zooming in but I can I guess have detailed pictures of both. But what I can ensure certainly is they are two different sizes.
It's obvious just what's provided in pictures look at the gap between d and the nine and eight and so forth all in between the numerals way further distance than others.
