I have a 2005 Lincoln cent that appears off-color. It has the color, I believe, of zinc. Several weighings have been in the range of 2.46 to 2.48 grams - never higher. The official weight is 2.50 grams. Is it possible that this coin skipped the copper plating process? Any suggestions or comments would be most welcome. Is this a coin collectors dream or is it something less mysterious? (I'm new to on-line forums so please excuse me if this has not been posted correctly.) Thanks all, Sandy
Again Ken: On the other hand, it has the same coloring (not a toning) throughout and I don't think it's plated. I've never seen that color of a Lincoln penny in all of the 80+ years I've been around. So, thanks for the answer but I'm not convinced.
In chemistry class when i was in high school, we used to take pennies and do a process of giving them a very thin plating of zinc, then placing them over a bunsen burner and the zinc plating would turn a gold color. See if you can google the process of turning a penny gold.
Hi Ken454: I thank you very much for your comments and all of the photos. I've got the picture now. I'll just keep the coin as a souvenir. Sandy
