I'm new to this whole coin thing and I found this strange quarter in my grandfathers old collection of coins. Any information on it is appreciated. 20160629_124748_020.jpg 20160629_125540_001.jpg

Hi, are you referring to the three gouges on the obverse?

I think it looks like damage incurred after leaving the mint, Philadelphia mint, that is.

Hi and welcome to CT. 1971 circulation Quarters only had a mintmark for Denver. A "D" would be located under the Eagle's tail feathers just below the wreath and above the "R" in "QUARTER". This was minted at the Philadelphia mint as no "D" mintmark is visible. As for the 3 gouges on the obverse, they are called PMD or Post Mint Damage. These marks were made after the coin left the mint. Hopes this helps.:)

Wrong! For Washington Quarters the mint marks first appeared on the obverse in 1968. The mint marks last appeared on the reverse in 1964.

Yeah its a spender. And only the branch mints used mintmarks then. Welcome to CT.

Yeah, there are times I wish I had my references at work instead of home. Thanks for the correction. :)

I have two 1971 no mint Mark quarters. Both are different. The lettering on one is wide the other thin.
Do you consider one an error

If there is no mint mark then it is from the Philadelphia mint.

I just found a 71 quarter with no mint on it. I searched the back also. So you guys are saying that they are just worth a .25 cents? Just asking. Christy Tippett
