Howdy Mike - Welcome to the Forum !!

Pics would be best to know for sure, but based on your description it sounds lile you have a coin that was struck with a clogged die. It happens rather often with all denominations and adds no value to speak of.

Eight to five, and half your money back if you lose, that you have a coin with "filled die" errors. These occur when grease or other foreign substances become lodged in the recesses of a die, preventing that part of the design from being fully struck. (Of course you may just have a coin struck by a hammer after minting, but let's not get negative about this. :D )

While this very common "error" usually adds nothing to the value of a coin, the number and size of gaps in yours might bring a small premium from a dedicated error collector.
