I've only been at this for a week and I've found some really cool (to me) stuff. I'm hooked already! Today I was going through some of my change and found this 1952 no mint mark nickel. I looked to the right of Monticello, not there. This coin is rough, but I'm pretty excited about it. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Nice find! Very few pre 1964 nickels are still floating around in circulation around this neck of the woods. This week I searched 8 boxes ($800.00) of nickels finding only 75 pre 1970 coins. 4 are War Nickels, 3 1958 (P), 1 Buffalo(27 D), and 1941 (P), AU 55+.
So it's definitely a keeper? it's a war nickel? And what does it mean that it has no mint mark? AU 55+? Please excuse me, but as I said I'm a newbie.
AU is About Uncirculated AU 50 is the lowest AU, AU 59 is the highest AU grade. A War Nickel is a nickel minted between 1942-1945. They contain 35% silver material. The mint mark is on the reverse at the top of the dome on the building. They are easy to distinguish due to the placement of the mintmark and the size of the mintmark. Also a Philadelphia minted coin has a large P.
There's tons of 1964's they are worth a nickel. If the 1952 was in better shape, it would be worth about a dime. There are some good Jefferson nickels. 1938, 1938D 1938S, 1939D,1939S,1942D, all of the silver war nickels 1942-1945 ( in 1942 they made both regular and silver nickels, the silver ones have a huge letter at 12 o'clock over the dome on the reverse) 1946S,1948S,1949S,1950,1950D,1951S, 1955 D over S. And some other varieties. (1954 S over D, 1949 D over S).
It is a Philadelphia coin. Only on War Nickels, (silver) 42-45 have a P for Philadelphia, until 1980 off the top of my head. Someone will correct me if 1980 is incorrect.
I think: Yes 1980 is about right. In 1979 they started putting P for Philly on the Susan B Anthony dollar coins, and then 1980 on all the others except cents. In 2017 the cents carry the P for the 225th anniversary of the mint, and then they will take it off again.
