I had a rare mid-week day off so, I decided to take a trip down to my LCS...... I grabbed 2 items that were just put out in the case> I came outta there with a rare NGC Multi-coin holder containing a 1966 SMS set for $15. I'm pretty sure I could get $50 easy out of it IF I wanted to sell. Got a 2016 kookaburra which is another rare bird to run across in ye old LCS. A 2019 Zombucks (slayed dollar) which I thought was cool. '29s quarter junk bin find and a nice looking American flag silver bar. All told, it cost me less than $100 for the lot..... What say ye??
Nice. I'm sure you've seen my ngc 5 coin tape toner morgan multi. I dig multi-holders I gotta wonder though about all grading 67. Was it one set that just happened to all be 67's? That seems *kind of* odd.
Yes, I've seen the toned Morgan's, I want one!!! I have been on the lookout for a toned Morgan Multi-holder for at least 2 years. The MS67 grade does seem kinda odd, I wonder if the grader's boss was cracking a whip that day? lol I haven't even had a chance to look @ the SMS under a glass yet. I'm hoping for the '66 DDO, and any other varieties. Maybe I'll get lucky and blindfold one.
Not odd at all. Just send your 5 individual 67 slabs (or a set of any other grade) for reholdering. Voila! I don't think they do it any more, though.
True And pcgs will. I asked dave hall at the last long beach expo about putting my 72s ike with a peeled clad layer that's in 2 seperate pcgs slabs into a multi and he said to just send it in for reholdering and write "put in multi holder" on the form
Yea, I thought I heard that they quit doing the multi-coin holders due to such low demand (could be wrong) and I also recall it being very expensive> like $60+..... Oh and this is the 1st SMS set I've ever seen or heard of in this type holder. Does anyone else own one??? Very curious to hear replies about this
That's cool. Glad to know some of them are still around. Next time I see one, I'll have to get it but only if it's one of the SMS's. Great find and a good price!
I have only one of the multi coin slabs. Took it in a trade several years ago . I forgot I had it until this post.
I only found 1 proof set (1954) in this style holder on the Bay. The rest were presidential, state quarters, ASE, a '22-'25 peace dollar set and oh yea, a really cool error Lincoln set being offered on the Bay right now! But no SMS sets such as this one
This is the error Lincoln set I found: $85.00 OBO. Pretty cool but I have no idea on the value of such a set.
Cascade, I don't recall seeing that San Fran set with the medal before, That's a neat item! Complete shot in the dark here but if you ever upgrade the 2 piece toned Morgan's I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for it. As I know u will never part with the tape toner one, or was it from a rubber band?
Interesting. Seems like they'd put anything in a multi holder with a custom label, as long as it fits and you pay for it, huh?
So NGC doesn't do the multi coin holder's any longer correct? I had sent into them a group of Jefferson errors years ago. I wanted them all in a 5 coin slab. They were sets of off center as well as chips and broadstrikes. They called me and talked me out of doing them that way . Their reason was the coins I sent in were all like ms 67 -69 fs nickels. And they said they couldn't fit all the information on each coin on the multi slab. So they graded them in single holders. They also asked me if I had more that were of the same quality .
Actually it's most likely from cardboard strips on old albums from the 30's. I'll keep it in mind. Your right, the tape toner slab is staying put unless I get a moon money offer. Both were not cheap though and let's just say the tape toner one was over 10x the price paid for the double
@Paddy54 I'm not 100% but I recall reading a post that said they did away with these. I'm kinda curious about it, if u notice, most of these holders are the old style; b4 the edge view was introduced. I'm surprised NGC couldn't use small enough font on the labels to put all the necessary information for your nickels. They had enough room for those error Lincoln's above with a bunch of leftover space.
Officially they ended the multi-coin holders back in 2011. At first they only ended them for collectors but allowed authorized NGC dealers to continue getting them. but by the end of 2011 they had ended them completely. HOWEVER I have seen multi-coin holder with coins dated later than 2011 in them. So although they don't do them anymore they DO do them for certain favored people. Who those people are or how they get them I do not know.
