Have seen PFMA and PFSA in the census and elsewhere on the NGC website. But not found definitions there. Guessing PFMA is proof matte finish and PFSA is proof satin finish. Can anyone confirm? Cal
No, but I would think that looking at any slab with those designations, if indeed the slabs even have such a designation, or the date/mint, denomination in the census itself should answer the question as Proof Matte and Proof Satin are not exactly common.
Found something that confirms my guess. I first encountered the abbreviations looking at census data for some French coins with which I was unfamiliar. So, looked at census data for 1921-22 peace dollar proofs which I know were produced in matte and satin finishes. What I found is pictured below. On a slab label, it’s PF followed by a number. The word SATIN or MATTE appears too. See examples. If you want one of these beauties, better have deep pockets. Cal View attachment 1582985
