I am concerned that I am unable to verify the certification number of a coin that I assumed was certified by NGC. The certification no. is 1793967-296 and is supposed to be a shipwreck effect coin from the SS Republic. Since, I can't find the certification number on the NGC website, does this mean I have a forgery?
Not really exactly. sometimes your serial number it doesn't go up to your monitor because of the computer error. The best thing to do try to call NGC Office and ask them if your number has been recorded. Now if does not... I think the earthquake is coming... I will exit here for a while....:rollling::yes:
I would not be overly concerned . Nothing about that plastic holder suggests to me it is a " knock off " . Call NGC in the morning and ask them to check the Certification number and ask them why it does not yet show-up in the Online Data base. Chances are, they haven't upgraded that data yet.
Maybe it doesn't show up because it was one of the coins that wasn't graded, but only slabbed for the provenance. Chris
I sure hope that this coin is genuine and all works out for you. While I cannot determine the grade of the coin by the photos, I suspect that it is a valueable coin, if original. You surely have to verify with NGC. And ask them to add it to their inventory website.
Thanks to all of you for your comments. I will give NGC a call tomorrow morning and I'll let you know what I find out.
Is there a generation of NGC that has that sticker? The placement seems weird and it definetly does not look like most NGC stickers that ive seen.
The coin's grade is "Shipwreck Effect", it was not assigned any other grade because the coin was so badly damaged by the sea. It was conserved by NGC. I hope these pictures will give you a better idea of what the coin looks like.
Are you sure about those dates? I ask because my Mom and I were at the NGC office in January, 2005 to deliver some submissions, and we were given a tour of the area where the ship's artifacts were being conserved. The area where the coins were being conserved was off-limits, but we were also there in February, 2005 to take delivery of my submissions, and that was when representatives of Odyssey Marine were present to take delivery of all of the coins. Chris
I'm not 100% sure on the dates, because these are special slabs, and not the normal slabs. But, going by Condor's post, NGC started using the new hologram that covered most of the back of the slab, and included the PNG endorsement on November 18th 2004. I took a look on NGC's site, and while it looks like the coins weren't released until 2005, it looks like some were conserved and slabbed as early as December 22 2003: SS Republic Coins
Thanks! I wasn't sure when they actually began the conservation, but those visits, I will never forget. The ship's bell with "U.S.S. TENNESSEE" emblazoned on it was really something to see. It was also the submission of my Kennedy missing the clad layer. Chris
I've always been fascinated by shipwreck coins. While I don't have any myself, I would love to get some in the future.
All is well. I spoke with NGC and the certification number is legitimate. It had something to do with this being one of the SS Republic coins, that perhaps they did not have it in the system. It should now be in the online database. I'm very relieved!
The cert # is there, but they don't have photos. I wonder if there are photos for the others that weren't graded? Chris
Pretty much as I figured . I have the complete catalog from the S.S. Republic Sale and Prices Realized . I'll have to check this one out . Terrific piece of history. Congrats on your purchase.
