There is a auction coming up shortly. This is a small town and the auctioneers are not the most professional outfit out there but there are very few options for sellers here.

I have a list of the lots, but some info is lacking from there but i'm hoping someone can give some advice as to the retail value of some of these coins and other items. The diamonds i don't care about because they have appraisals for them which are waaaaay over what they are really worth so theres bound to be at least a couple of idiots who fall for them and bid more than they are worth. I've done some research but the list is extensive and i can't research them all in time. So i'm hoping someone can point out any gems they see. I'm guessing retail on any ASE's are around $35-ish. The prestige sets go for around $30 retail and the '83 seems to sell for $40-ish (shipped). I'm guessing the gold plated coins are crap, just some gimmic?

    I would appreciate any info/feedback.

    Below is the list:

You don't expect us to read the entire list of items, do you? (Because I didn't.)

Glancing here and there in the list I did not see anything I would be interested in. Mostly common recent releases, plated crap, common type coins ("3 rare coins - 1937 nickel, 1907 penny, 1908 Liberty nickel"). The list give absolutely no indication of condition so I am left to assume the older coins are all well circulated.

My advice is to not be like "Oh man I really want that" and then get into a bidding war with someone. Especially don't forget the buyers percentage. At a quick browse of the titlewave of lots, I don't see one thing worth bidding on. Lots of "gold plated" stuff and non u.s. mint stuff. Run forest, run!

No, i don't expect anyone to read the entire list, just to glance it like you did. I hessitated posting because i didn't want someone to think i wanted them to do all my homework by going through the list and pricing things up.

I'm just looking for any feedback from people go want to glance through the list.

Oh, i'm not like that at an auction. But thats one reason i want to get an idea as to value so i can get a set price in my head.

I wouldn't even go with the rubbish they are trying to sell.

It will be fun to watch though. Put whatever money you were going to spend on a night out, and put it in your wallet, leave the rest at home as I can guarantee, you will leave saying I should have bought that then and later at home saying I shouldn't have bought this:( Excitement and a time limit to decide is a sure formula for making errors. US bullion is OK, just know how high you want to go and stop there ( remember the premium %). Face is OK also if US money.

Remember it is a reality type show !

lol, yeah, i did think a lot of it was crap, the sort of stuff they try to peddle on those QVC type shows. But not being experienced i thought i would ask in case what i thought was junk was something more. I'm sure i'll overlook something good, but i'll go for a bit to get a feel for how they do it there. I've always done well at these auctions but never been to a coin one.

My advice, and I see many lots in your lengthy list, is to not bid on or consider bidding on anything that's plated. It's worthless, and damaged as far as I'm concerned.

Make sure you know what to look for to determine if a coin is truly uncirculated, or just the auctioneer's limited opinion on that.

"LOT 139 2004 michigan U.S. air force quarter, LOT 140 2004 michigan coast guard, LOT 141 2004 michigan US navy quarter, LOT 142 US marine corps quarter, LOT 143 2004 michigan US army corps quarter,"

Sounds like real coins with colored decals stuck on one side, i.e. junk.

Lot 170, Dale Earnhart Silver Eagle, Mint never made such a thing; however, it sounds like one of those genuine silver eagles with a decal stuck over one side. If you bid on this, remember silver is hovering around $30 an ounce, and just because someone put a sticker of The Intimidator on this, does not increase it's value at all.

I can't read anymore of the list, it's giving me a headache.

Looks like a lot of lists from auctioneers who haven't a clue. Beware of lies like "1973 90% silver Eisenhower dollar". THey were 40% or clad, never 90%. Looks like many auctions I have attended. If you know what you are doing they can be ok, stay away ALWAYS from gold clad, stamp combos, colorized, replicas, or anything else not in the redbook if US coins. Never assume a value of something at places like this. If you know how to grade, go there as early as you can and look at each lot in hand. You also need to knw if a coin has been cleaned or not.

Do your homework, look up prices, ask if there is a buyers commission, and create your bid. Do not go one cent over, as its too easy to get caught up in bidder frenzy and overpay.

Ignore prices on the flips (if any). I've seen outrageous prices written on flips with common coins in them and some of the auction attendees bid on them according to what they saw. Several Canadian large cents, worth about $1.50 each, went for $25 to $55.

I would go there for the first time and just watch, don't buy anything. Make it an educational thing and a way to get use to auction protocal.

    Good point.

Listen, when you go there, there are tons of lots, you are bored because there is a bunch of worthless garbage being sold, you are a collector and want to buy something. Its easy to get worked up and start justifying in your mind why "maybe that coin wasn't as bad as I thought", or "maybe its worth a little more". Lots of reasons why people overpay, and its easy to do. It takes discipline to stick to your guns. I have went to tons of these things, and nowadays have the discipline to sit through one and not buy a single coin, or to recognize value and buy a ton more coins than I expected if they are going too cheap. Most of the time its the former, though. Most of the time the prices at these are too high, so just expect that. Be disciplined always, and do NOT promise yourself you will come home with some new coins. Anyone who does that is setting themselves up for failure in my view.

In my experience, 70% of the time I buy nothing, 20% I buy one or two items, 9% I buy a few things, and 1% I get lucky and buy a ton.

The company could have done a better job of setting this up. Very mickey mouse. The owner should have taken them to Phoenix and let a auction company there do this.

I went the first day but not the second. The second day did seem to have the better stuff. The lists on the day were far better than the crap they posted on the website. The day i missed had a bunch of ASE and over 100 Morgan dollars, many pre 1900's, many graded fine/extra fine although i'm not sure who graded them exactly.

I overpaid on a couple of coins because i made an error on my notes...no biggie as it was only a buck or so over, but did get a Dale Earnhardt ASE for $32.50 (purchased it for the silver, not the muppet on the coin). I also picked up something interesting that i haven't been able to find on ebay. They were sold as coasters but they don't have the cork bottom and have the designs on both sides. They are 3" replicas of a $20 Gold coin. 8 of them are 1882 and 1 of them is 1884. Probably worth nothing but seeing how i only paid $2 for all of them i don't think that was too bad.

Wish i had gone today out of curiousity. Could have been some good buys
