I would like to buy a gold coin for a wedding gift, in the $300 to $900 range. The 2011 gold panda is my first choice as of right now, due to the date, and having two animals, although they appear to be a parent and offspring. Other ideas are welcome such as platinum, but I would prefer something besides silver, unless it is a really nice looking coin.
How about a 1911 half eagle or $3. Something unique, with numismatic value that is 100 years older than their wedding year.
How about a 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle? It shows a family of eagles on the back, that may be kind of cool.
I agree that either the 1/2 ounce (currently $906) or 1/4 ounce (currently $465.60) proofs AGE is the way to go. Some world mints also have wedding gifts. Here is the Royal Mint for example: http://www.royalmint.com/store/catalogue/occasions/weddings.aspx TC
I went with the 1/4 gold eagle. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, all good ideas! I like it having the date the same as the wedding and the family of eagles makes it easy to include a note relating it to their future together!
You could try to find them one of the Royal wedding coins. Then you could just get an engraver to re-engrave their names on it, and fix the date. Probably a bad idea... ...and I'm even more impressed with my ability to read the entire thread before I reply.
Platinum Koalas are pretty coins IMO. Different designs each year.. Problem is platinum is very dense and thus even a half ounce coin is going to be pretty small and at the top of your budget.
A very nice wedding gift, Mach330. Eagles are monogamous and mate for life (unless one dies ) Nice symbolism.. (IMO) Lucy
Was this on their wedding shower list? lol Sure as heck beats the hand towels and bread makers everyone seems to always give for weddings!
Thanks! It's for my brother, I felt like getting something that they would remember.. And no it wasn't on their list but I didn't want to get something that they would get bored with after a few months and never use it again.
Personally, I think you chose a great gift... I think everyone should own at least 1 gold/silver coin. It stimulates thought and discussion on the topic of PM. When I was born, a fairly distant relative gave me a 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagle. Its in a small box along with a note to my parents congratulating them on their baby. As for your gift, I would bet your brother will be hard pressed to get any other gift that means as much to him as your gift. Congrats to your brother. - Dan
The Proof mintage is only 4830 and it has a nice Wedding Dance scene on the reverse. Hard to go wrong with a First Spouse Coin! ...don't know how you can protect it, though.
