    Hi all,

I am looking at a coin on eBay.com graded by this company. It seems to be a generous grade. I searched the company on google and people say that they are generous and will even grade fake coins. Do you guys believe this is possible? How can I search their identification number to authenitfy this coin? Is there a search option on their site?

Any opinions or comments are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Larry

Almost certainly generous (very generous) in grade and possibly cleaned or otherwise damaged. I have never heard of them grading a fake coin, but it would not astound me. (FWIW, so have NGC and PCGS, but rarely.)

NNC is not a reputable company.

Simply treat any coin found in such holders as if it were raw.

Also, searching their certification number doesn't authenticate the coin.

I would be more skeptical of an NNC coin than a raw coin; there is a reason someone sends a coin to a disreputable grading company. Having said that, there are occasionally good coins in NNC slabs, though considerably (10 pts or so) overgraded even if they are actually problem free. Make sure you have clear pictures to go on.

I'd stay away. Too expensive for the risk. If you had a good 1795 half dollar, would you send it to NNC?

I've only bid on an NNC coin once, and that was from a reputable dealer who I had dealt with before. I disregarded the slab grade and spoke to him directly about his personal assessment of the coin prior to bidding.

Do you know this series? Do you have any reference books in which you can compare the coin?

Just because there are 30 bids doen't mean they are informed collectors. When you get to this price level for a coin, IMO, you stay away from the unreliable TPG's and NNC is certainly one to be concerned about.

If you don't know what you're doing, the odds are definitely stacked against you. NNC standards aren't anywhere near PCGS or NGC standards. If you are an experienced collector who can identify problem coins, grade for yourself, and can authenticate the piece, then you can come out fine if you bid accordingly.

The half went for just about what it should have, ie, about what a cleaned VG should go for. The seller, Centsles is known to submit coins which wouldn't get a clean grade from a top tier grading company to NNC for inflated gift grades. Usually, his coins (like this one) gender bids equal to their actual worth, but the occasional coin that does get overbid more than makes up for it profit-wise. Any of his coins that would receive a straight grade go to PGCS.

Centsles has twice won the dealer grading competition that PCGS (used to?) holds annually. He knows what coins will and won't grade cleanly. Make your own judgment as to whether or not you want to deal with him.

Centsles is or owns NNC. He also has a reputation for buying problem/details coins in PCGS/NGC slabs and then reslabbing them in NNC holders as problem free.

Let's just say there is more spread than SGS which slabbed almost everything as a 70.

I've dealt with Mr. Johnson for many years, and have maaany coins in his holders. I believe a buyer generally receives fair exchange for their funds.

Does he "overgrade"? A subjective topic, but I believe from product received, very much so!!

I could also take you on a current eBay "tour" to show you "top tier" TPG graded coins believed to make the "market grading" standard laughable. Coins that some in this venue say would NEVER receive a grade.

I personally have received a 5 figure dollar amount coin which I found "unacceptable", and it was returned to Mr. Johnson for a full virtually imediate refund. An unusual experience, based on my past eBay dealings.

Do I believe he would intentionally authenticate a "copy" coin, NO!!!

If there's a problem with your purchase, eBay should cover you, but don't necessarily rely on their promise.

I believe Centsles to be honorable!
