Any thoughts on this piece? I think it is silver and may be a flattened Islamic, Indian State ... or? coin that has been engraved with symbols I cannot make any sense of. It is about 24mm x 32mm & 3.1g. Thank you!
interesting piece. pretty sure it started out as a coin. can't make out reverse/ obverse to identify original. could not find mint mark . might be a signature or makers mark. maybe a commemorative or love token. i think you have identified origin correctly but many thousand possibilities in 18th and 19th century to check out. maybe sone here can read Arabic. first symbol looks like a numeral 5, i can pick out 1,2,3, but the L shape has me stumped.
The fifth line uses diacritical marks called Niqqud - these are largely omitted in written Hebrew, except in special cases like religious texts. I'm guessing that line is a quote from the Torah, and the piece is a homemade religious medallion.
I know what all the letter are, but I can't venture a translation. Someone fluent in Hebrew should be able to do it, since it's pretty clear. Figuring out the host coin looks tough though - it looks like it was put through one of those penny rollers. (Could be Yiddish too.)
