My new crab

    SICILY, Akragas. Circa 500-495 BC. AR Didrachm (19mm, 8.17 g, 7h). Sea eagle standing left / Crab within incuse circle. Jenkins, Gela, Group IIc; HGC 2, 93. Near VF, toned.

    From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection. Ex Sotherby’s (22 May 1975), lot 20.

    One of the earliest Akragas crab coinage and a beauty at that, congrats on a wonderful coin H8_modern, my earliest is about 420 BC, this Hemilitron. 51049.l.jpg

    Nice one, @H8_modern. One of those is on my list as well. My Akragas is a bronze, a tetras.

    Ummm, I have a slightly used/experienced example of this cool coin-type ... wanna see it?

    SICILY, Akragas. Æ Hemilitron
    Late 5th century BC
    Diameter: 28 mm
    Weight: 14.71 grams
    Obverse: Eagle standing right, tearing at hare
    Reverse: Crab; six pellets around, crayfish below; c/m: head of Herakles right, wearing lion’s skin, within circular incuse
    Reference: For undertype: cf. HGC 2, 136; for c/m: CNS 107 CM
    Other: 11h .... Coin Near VF, countermark VF, green patina. Well preserved undertype.

    I have been looking at Akragas Crabs... nice catch @H8_modern !

    I have a tiny crab as a device:

    Hmm, I have an Akragas hexas from a large mixed lot blindly purchased four years ago. Upgrade definitely needed!

    I just won this in their recent Auction 2 (you have seen it), but I won on 9-April and RECEIVED it yesterday, 13-April! SHOCKED how quickly it shipped and arrived from Deutschland! (Tracking showed that it was delivered to Fedex on 11-April, in my hands 13-April)...

    Love it! I managed to snag one of these some months ago from the late David Murrey.

    Sicily, Akragas
    AR Nomos (BC 510-500)
    24 mm x 8.30 grams.
    Obverse: Eagle with closed wings standing l., AKRAC-ANTOS around
    Reverse: Crab.
    Ref: ANS 911.
    Note: Dark gray toning
    Prov. ex. David Murrey, Tyche Numismatics.

    They say its an eagle but its clearly a pigeon.
