Although I have yet to see a theatrical/film treatment of the *exciting* lives of coin collectors, cherrypickers, currency dealers, or expert numismatists, I have come across this neat little flick, made by Orson Welles, in all of his later corpulent glory. (For an old, fat guy in his later life, he sure could still mack the girls). It's really about a famous art forger, so it touches on the subject of counterfeiting. Any others?
Somewhere In Time - This is a great movie. Don't want to tell the entire story or ruin the plot but this is part of the story - Quote "Richard buys an early 20th-century suit and some vintage money; he cuts his hair in a time-appropriate style. Dressing in the suit, he removes all modern objects from his hotel room and attempts to will himself into the year 1912 using tape-recorded suggestions, only to fail for lack of real conviction. Later, while searching the hotel's attic, Richard finds an old guest book from 1912 with his signature in it and realizes that he will eventually succeed." closed quote If you have not seen it.. a coin is what does him in. You have to see it to understand!
Hollywood doesn't seem to portray coin collectors in a good light when they do portray them. A Mission Impossible episode was about toppling a drug kingpin who was also a coin and stamp collector. I also remember a movie that was about a coin collector who bought rare coins with money he got as a mafia hit man. They gave us a break with Eiger Sanction-Clint Eastwood collected stolen art. I think he was also a hitman.
American Buffalo (1996; 88 Minutes) This drama features Don (Dennis Franz), an antique store owner who accidentally sells a rare Buffalo nickel for far less than it’s really worth. Determined to steal the Buffalo nickel back and sell for its full value so that he may achieve his dream of ascending the economic rungs, Don plots to his young teenage friend Bob (Sean Nelson) steal the coin back, much to the chagrin of another of Don’s friends, Teach (Dustin Hoffman). This gritty film not only unveils the prospect of selling coins for less than they’re really worth (which is a common worry among nearly all coin collectors) but the troubles of living in the very dregs of society.
Yeah, I knew that! John Wooden, the head basketball coach at UCLA, was known as the "Wizard of Westwood". Chris
The 1947 film "The Brasher Doubloon" was about a coin. The film I want to see about a rare gold coin hasn't been made yet. Who will play King Farouk?
Getting Even With Dad. Ted Danson and Macaulay Culkin. Even shows some slabs if i remember correctly.
Titanic -- note the Barber Dime Kate Winslet gives Leonardo DiCaprio for the drawing Gangs of New York showed many interesting coins during the Civil War era
Dennis the Menace, from the early 90's, revolves around Mr. Wilson and a plot by some burglars to steal his collection of gold coins.
The movie "Dear John" with Channing Tatum spent a decent part of the plot on coin collecting. I actually didn't care for its eventual premise towards coin collecting, because it sort of portrayed coin collectors as addicts and having a touch of dementia.....which is probably only partly true -
