Hello! I was given around 80 Morgan silver dollars from my relative this week. I was looking through all of them and this one seemed to stand out to me. I've been looking around and reading about these coins for the past few hours. I have yet to find any 1890 coin with the same marking on it's face. Does anyone have a clue what this is or if its worth anything more then just the common Morgan silver dollars? Thank your for you help
I don't value counterstamps on Morgan dollars. That's a damaged coin to me. I would not pay more than $22 for this coin based on melt value of silver and the amount of silver in the coin.
Thanks for the quick replies. What kind of advice do you have for someone that wants to get rid of some coins? Should I spend time on research of each coin.. Or just take the 80 coins to a collector or coin shop? Thanks again for your help
If they are all in a condition similar to the one you've shown, they would have to be a key date or semi-key date to be worth anything over melt value. There is .77344 oz. of silver in each Morgan dollar, and you can multiply this by the current price of silver x 80 coins to get a ballpark of the total value. Bear in mind, that most dealers will only offer about 80%-90% of this because they have to make a living, too, but they won't rip you off like Pawn Stars. If you get a chance, make a list of all the dates with their mintmarks and post it here. Each coin will have either "CC" - Carson City, "O" - New Orleans or an "S" - San Francisco. If there is no mintmark, it was struck in Philadelphia. You can find the mintmark on the reverse (tails side) just below the bow above the "DO" of DOLLAR. This will enable us to determine if you have any coins that might be worth more. Chris
Alright, ill make a list tomorrow after my college class late afternoon. I appreciate all of the help, and ill talk to you tomorrow (=

If possible, I'd like to see photos of both 1886-O, the 1891-O and the 1892-O. Are the 1921's Morgan or Peace dollars? Chris
