I am absolutely the worst at grading. I would like some opinions as to the grade of this Morgan. Thanks.
I am not sure what you mean by 2nd rev. There is a rev of 78, the short knock, and the reg rev of 79 long knock, rounded breast.
Thanks Randy. I have all but 3 of the Morgans. I have acquired them over the last 75 years. Some I got at the local banks for $1. Some I got in change or swapped for at local stores and shops. Some I traded other collectors for. Some I got from LCS. But, none are graded. Like you say they are "...beautiful..." as my standard has always been eye appeal. I don't want to send them to a TPG. I just want to get some opinions to include with them as I pass them on. Thanks for the feedback.
Few bag marks, reverse is starting to tone nicely, obverse not so much. Nice Morgan, MS-63 in my opinion. Thanks for sharing, happy holidays to you and yours.
The 1879 S reverse of 78 has the upper arrow feather straight, whereas the 1879 S reverse of 79 has the upper arrow feather slanted. Here is my 1879 S reverse of 79, compare the arrow feathers from mine to op's coin. Also, Inspector's coin is pretty darn nice, as those aren't easy to find in any grade.
Yes, 2nd reverse is the correct reverse, or also parallel arrow feather works. My coin is the 3rd reverse, or slanted arrow feather. For those that are curious, the 1st reverse is the 1878 8 tail feathers.
Thank you. I am trying to get a feel for grading my Morgans. I grew up with the Good, Very Good, etc. As a comparison to the 79-S above, here is an 80-O that has good detail but is dark from toning I would guess. Does that take it out of the MS designations?
