    Mint sucks...
    Pitney Bowes sucks....

My Tyler roll was shipped out on the 11th, and it is in San Antonio, has been here for 2 days, and it is still not to me! That makes me angry!
    Mint make um' me angry...

That is one of the many weird thing about this email IT DOES NOT SAY!! I guess it was the Unc Lincoln dollar, they had some returns and are going to send me a crappy one I'd guess.

I know folks claim to get returned junk but from what I have read, the mint destroys returned products unless they are boxes returned to sender without being opened.

The Mint has nothing to do with the fact that the shipping service is letting your roll sit in San Antonio. Put the fault on the right people.

With all that the Mint does I think they do a fine job!! :thumb: Just think of how many orders they process a day. I have no problems if they ship my order in 4 to 6 weeks of placing the order. I just bought 10 proof sets and paid for next day shipping and I had my coins within 7 days of placing my order!!

I've not had problems with the mint.

I got my "2nd chance" Tyler roll on TH and it is up on a 3 day auction to close tonight. Right now I'm losing money on it, but I'm sure it will jump in the last hours.....I'm not worried.

    :)

Well when you are trying to make a profit off of coins you buy at the mint, to buy coins you actually want, it gets a little frustrating.

The mint made a change in shipping services to the current wackos that they use, so really it is the Mint at fault.

Look at how many computers that Dell puts out a day, and for the most part none are defective. The mint seems to be running at a 25% defective rate based on the 2009 mint set review thread.

You can't base it off that thread - I know 5 people who have their mint sets without any problems. Only one of the pennies in one of my sets has a tiny mark - but not a big deal as far as I am concerned. And I'll skip the dell comparison - since nobody wants to know my opinions on those:). The mint does a fine job as far as I am concerned.

Though my clad proof sets were really nice this time, I'd say that over the past 5 years they have a 25% defect rate, I'd like to get the opinions of other forumites in this. My proof Lincoln commem was defective but due to the fact that they sent it out long after the sell out I could not get a replacement. Further look at that letter in the OP and tell me they are doing a "fine job". That is a crazy letter and they are no where near professional.

Oh, btw I'd call that thread a pretty random sample with a slant toward a POSITIVE result since the OP was positive toward the mint, so in fact 30% may be closer.

True - it very well could be that kind of percentage. All I can say it that I have been buying from them since 1985 regularly - I have had exactly one return. I think it was the San Fran gold coin - not in its little airtite and it was heavily scratched. And this proof set I just do not want to mess with for the one penny. I think my father had one return also, but can't remember what it was. The worst part is how many people buy from the mint and never really look at the coins? Now that would be interesting. I go thru all the coins just to see what they are like.

My grandpa has been buying proof sets since 1960. He always buys 5 sets and all of them are still sealed in the shipping boxes. He has never opened a single package from the mint. I want to open the 70, 71, and 83 to check for the no-s but he will not let me. If you think about it there is extra value added since they are still sealed in the shipping boxes.

I have never sent any coins back to the Mint.

I don't think the average collector cares if there is a tiny spot(s) on there proof coin. Just look at the quality of the unc set before 1999. They sold millions of the sets and I think most of the unc sets look like crap!!

Like I said I think the mint does a fine job with all that they do!! :thumb:

Sometimes yes and sometimes no - I would not pay extra for an unopened set - just because I would never be that lucky. I know sometimes at auctions people do bid more, but I do no think they garner a real premium. Just my opinion. Glad it is your grandfather - that would aggrevate me. :)

He is great guy, I have seen those 1970 sealed sets fetch over $100 per set just because you have a chance of getting a NO-S. The 1968-1972 sets also bring a premium at auction because of chance of getting high grade ultra cameo coins.

I also would never pay a premium because I am never that lucky.
