I was going through a hoard of teen wheat pennys An came across this mercury dime 1919 with a wheat back its the size of a dime half silver half copper just wondering what everyone thinks
Welcome to CT, Kenny. Based on your description, I'd say you have a magician's coin. It may be worth a half a buck on ebay.
Magicians Coin is what I think without even seeing a photograph. Since dime blanks are punched from 90% Silver strips and cent blanks are punched form 95% copper strips, there is absolutely no way that a mixed metal coin coin of 90% Silver and 95% Copper could be produced at the US Mint. Half a dime was either imbedded into a Lincoln Cent or half of a dime and half of a cent were soldered together. Definitely a PMD coin.
mercury wheat I just put the coin under a mag glass there is no seperation of the metals the coin is a combo of metals like a rosevelt dime
Igot a microscope but in My mind it was made by some smart guy really did some excellent work binding An marriaging the coin, together its so good looks like mabe he worked at mint An was playing around on spare time
It might have been for this one guy 95 years ago before they caught him An fired him thanks for all the input on this coin
You're pretty determined to believe this to be a mint error, aren't you? How many people have to tell you the truth before you believe it? It's a magicians coin! Probably manufactured in someones basement. It cannot possibly have come from the mint like that!
Maybe the only way this guy will learn is to send it in to NGC or PCGS for authentication. They might slab it the as the worlds only Dimecent and he will make millions at the next Heritage Auction.....or they will body bag it as a fake and he will eat some crow for dinner ...yummy.
I don't have a microscope and I can tell you this is a PMD coin, and I agree 100% with the others on this, it's a magician's coin. You do; however, have the option of proving us all wrong. Just simply submit this coin to PCGS or NGC for authentication. I can guarantee it will be returned as neither of them would put this under their label.
Even if it was made at the mint, it was not made on any minting press. There is no way a coin such as this can occur in the regular minting process. It is not a mint issue.
I have seen many of these over the years. Just something someone has made. It's definitely not a mint error.
i would just like top say that all of you sound like a bunch of jealous babies. I bet you are all wishing with everything you are that this guy doesn't have anything special. you haven't seen the coin, AT ALL, not nearly enough to so suredly crap all over any possibility that he has something cool. well, in his defense, I hope the next coin you get excited about is completely dumped on by everyone here before you can send the second message about it. meanies,
