In 1996 the National Bank of Hungary released two coins celebrating the nation's 1,100th anniversary. The designs are inspired by artefacts from the age of the Hungarian conquest of the 9th century. I recently acquired the silver 2000 forint. (I believe it's the BU strike - I would expect the proof to have some cameo.) The obverse features a trio of mounted archers, the hind legs of the steeds resting on a silver plate typical of decorations found on Magyar battle gear. The reverse depicts a braided chest protector worn by cavalrymen, showing the mythical eagle "Turul" from the legend of the Arpad dynasty, founded in 896. There were 10,000 struck. A beautiful and unusual coin... There was also a gold coin made, which I don't own. Difficult to find, only 5000 struck.
