Hi, folks, wondering if anyone can suggest local options for me to take my sons coin shipping in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Thanks.
I always go to the one in downtown Plano. It's called Lone Star Mint. Have been going there for probably the last 4 years. They have a good selection, but are a little pricey. There is also a coin show up in Sherman this week. Great selection and these guys deal. I have been to that show several times. There are about 30 tables in the room. It's at the Quality In right off of 75. I forget the exit number, but if you want any additional information about these two shops, just PM me.
Thanks for the suggestion. I work in the Plano area so maybe I'll check out the shop during lunch one day and see if I want to take my boys. I found a link to the coin show with more details, so I think I'm good to go there. Thank you for the quick response!
Glad to help. Typical of coin shop owners this guy is a little bit of a cold fish, so don't mis interpret that. He knows his stuff, but is a kind of introvert. When asked he will answer questions, but kind of bothered me in the beginning when I was just re-starting my child hood hobby. I have to haggle with him a little harder than one of his assistants, whom a I prefer in the sense that I can get better deals through her. Usually get about 15% off their sticker price. If you work in the Plano area we may go to the same barber. I always go to Plano Barber.
Dallas Rare Coin & Silver has been my favorite in the Metroplex for a few years. But, please leave the bulk bin alone. MY PRECIOUS! I had a bad experience with the Dallas Gold & Silver Exchange off of 635 (compounded by the fact that I sent them a politely typed letter explaining how the situation was unfortunate... which they chose not to respond to), but the main store off of I-35 has a great selection and good customer service. I'm actually looking for a few new places. Lone Star doesn't really have any of the exonumia or foreign coins that I collect, and what they do have almost always gives me sticker shock.
Yes, I don't think they are big on the foriegn coins and are very proud of what they do have, but for me it's convienant and I like to hagle. I may have to try Dallas Rare Coin.
I looked for coin shops via the web first and seemed to find mostly pawn shops, so these suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.
For what it's worth, I drove over to Lone Star Mint yesterday after work and they were closing as I drove up. Closing early, I mean. They're supposed to be open until 6. They were closing at 5 instead because of the "weather" which, at the time, was a simple drizzle. Wasn't pleased that I made the trip for nothing.
That's too bad. Hope you get a chance to make another try. It really is a pretty good coin store, especially considering it's local. I got in the middle of some nasty stuff yesterday afternoon while driving home.
No promises! Can you confirm the store name, or the address? I'm planning on taking my younger son this weekend and started searching, but didn't find anything specifically by this name. I found Dallas Rare Coins on Forest. I found a Dallas Gold and Silver on Reeder Road (which I found amusing, the street name that is, given that they sell coins).
