    Hi all
Condition aside, is there a pre 1800 US coin type that is more common than others?

I really want a pre 1800 US coin with an identifiable date, but can’t pay a huge premium. I just want one that I can hold, for my love of US history and coinage.

    thank you!

Wow, great question. The only one I have is one I bought 50 years ago...

What about colonial coins? I guess they're considered British o_O

I would say the 1798 large cent would be the least expensive, most common, pre 1800 US coin.

 Love pre -1800's coins . I agree with " The Dog" @coin dog . Early Draped Busts are cool ! I wish I had one .:(
Shop around though, they can get pricey .

OP.... I had the same burning desire as you for most of my life. One of the happiest coin collecting days of my life was when I purchased an 18th century half cent. Yes, it was worn but all the features were there. I don't know your budget but there are several large cents and half cents that come up in the affordable range fairly regularly.

Edit... I just did a quick Ebay look and there are several 1797 cents in the $150.00 or less range. There is one damaged 1797 (Edge cut) with a perfectly readable date for fifteen bucks.

The 1798 LC is definitely the most affordable federal issue. I bought my first one way back in 1995 from my local dealer at the time. If you are willing to save up and splurge on something more exotic, the 1795 flowing hair half dollar is a personal favorite of mine. I have a problem free certified G4 that set me back less than $1K. After you buy your first pre-1800 US coin you won’t be able to stop with just one:)

I bought this 1798 Draped Bust Cent in 1989 for $35.00 at my LCS.

And in 2013, I bought this 1798 Draped Bust Dollar from DLRC for $1,050.

I am satisfied with these pre 1800 coins, and do not need any more.

    Good luck in your search!

Without knowing your "huge premium"...certainly not thousands I'm sure...but if a few hundred you will open up your selection possibilities significantly. A few years ago I purchased a 1799 draped bust silver dollar for $450 at a rural estate auction...ended up grading VF30. I admire your reasons in this effort...don't be in a rush and be patient...also bone-up on certain coins you like, to better ID them, the legit/better ones, etc.

The only Large Cent I need for a complete set is the 1799. In good condition it's $30,000 plus. The 1798 can be had for $30.00 plus. I bought my 1798 type 1 & 2, in G-4/G-8 condition, for $70.00 each. Good luck!

Think there might be an extra "0" in that price! Unfortunately, I am missing more than you, but the 1799 is one of them!

l.cutler, I was only looking at the one's that would compliment my set, $30,000 to $35.000. You are correct in that there are some at less cost but would not compare to the coins in my set (G-4 to MS-60). Three G-4's, the rest are G-8 and better. Thanks for your input. Good luck and be safe.
