When it comes to coins, size matters. The bigger ones have so much detail and are much easier to appreciate. I'm looking to add a few to my collection over the next several years. So, what are some large gold coins you know of? The largest one I know of is: 1725 Joao V 20,000 reis - Weight: 1.73oz or 53.8 grams Unfortunately, this one is a bit too pricey.
The largest I own is the Mexican 50 pesos, but that is around 1.2 ounces, (but a lot more affordable).
The largest gold "coin" that was circulated that came up to mind immediately was the Japanese oban. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ōban From memory it was about 5 ounces but it might be around 50% gold but that still gives you more than 2 ounces of gold in it. It's not surprising how much of these "coins" were exported out of Japan from exploiting exchange rates around 1800s and that caused an immediate change in coinage.
Here is the largest gold coin I am aware of... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/new...1/Worlds-largest-gold-coin-sold-for-2.7m.html
Canada has recently lost that record non-cents. Australia now has the ton gold coin. http://www.1tonnegoldcoin.com/
I owned a couple of 50 peso coins. They feel nice in your hands. And, that's why I said "coins minted for circulation". As gxseries mentions, the Perth mint made a 1 ton (1012kg) gold coin. Would be pretty nice to find in your change.
I thought I recognized the OP's coin - I used to own that exact coin 20000 Reis were one of the largest but the US $50 "slugs" were larger, at 85.49 grams. I had an 1851 $50 and that 20000 Reis raw at the same time: it is a surreal feeling to hold them in the "flesh" as they are extremely heavy. In antiquity, the distaters of Alexander the Great were the largest (at 17 grams) in gold up until the gold octodrachms were minted (27 grams).
