A quick question or two about the no FG I read that there is a No F and light G also and was wondering how NO are these. Can you see a trace of the FG or does it need to be totally void of it at all? Where these errors caused by there not being a FG on the die at all or is it worn dies that it doesnt show up? Thanks
I think these are caused by an over polished die. The FG was polished away. In order to be a no FG there cannot be any of the letters showing. This is actually not rare and can also be found on other dates. The 1982 no FG has been promoted so much that there is a market for them. You seldom hear of the other dates.
I was wondering the same thing yesterday. According to the book I have "Strike it Rich with Pocket Change" it says there is a few kennedys with no FG. I have a 1983 that looks like there is a shadow of FG almost like the reference targets or what have you were added for the engraver but the actual relief of the letters were not added. I wondered if it was just worn out because the stars just south east of the FG are worn out. I found it odd that the FG would wear before the legs because the FG is so tucked away inside that leg. Anybody have a suggestion or explanation?
From 64-83 Kennedy you can find the no FG. 1964+66-67 are rarer one to find.but 1982 no FG is get up in price too
I have found quite a few in various stages. Most are 1983P but some 1982P also. The majority are what is called "weak FG" and I do save them. Kennedys in general are not a hot series so the no FG and weak FG are not really in demand. Maybe someday ?
I have also found that there is not much dealer intrest in no FG halves. BTW, they have to be no FG visible at all.
There are at least three reasons for the missing designer’s initials (FG) on the Kennedy half dollar reverse...die abrading, filled die from grease and metal filings, and die deterioration. Larry Nienaber
My cherrypickers guide only talks about a 72d no FG. Do they just list the rare types? No listing for the 82... Still learning.
The initials are not as deeply incuse on the face of the die as the eagle's legs, so they would be the first to be abraded from the die. The initials are "tucked away" on the face of the coin, but not on the die. Chris
Here are two 1982-P. One has the initials completely missing and one is only partially missing. Chris
.. .. .. The No FG coins need to have the initials completely gone and it cannot be the result of a grease filled die but must be the result of die abrasion. I believe that the 1982 does have a varient where the F is gone with a weak G due to grease filling.
When I was younger and bought many bags of these searching for silver I put together a set of no FG's for something to do with non silver ones before I took them to the bank. I found all of them in the early 1980's to date. I am relying on others posting here that they are not found past 1983, as I think my newest was 1981. EDIT: Come to think of it, 72 and 74 seemed to be common, with the other dates more likely to be partial FG lettering. I don't know if this helps anything.
Interesting. Today, the 82's appear to be much more common than the 72's as I've had serious offers for the 72-D No FG's I've had slabbed. Very SERIOUS offers. The 82 No FG pictured above was purchased for $6.00 in open bidding on eBay whereas the coin here: http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2763&lot=1452 ran a bit more than $6.00. I've also encountered what appeared to be 1972-D No FG's but they were grease filled dies with hints of FG "mounds" below the leg indicating "die filling". A search of Teletrade over the past 2,000 days shows more 82 No FG's than 72-D's: Heritages archives shows nothing but 1866 SMS Coins.
Heres one I have for sale up now! its a 1983 P looks either very very light..or non existent your thoughts?
