Hey guy's & Ladies I recently had a friend give me a Kansas tax token . I don,t know much about this subject so I need some HELP!!!! The thing is if you look at the obverse it looks normal ( I guess since I,ve never seen one) but when you flip it over to reverse it's rotated about 20 degrees. If you look at reverse the arrow on flip points top of obverse , I think you will see what I mean . Is normal for tax tokens or is it counterfeit? If it's real any guess on grade and value?
Howdy Yes...rotated Tax Tokens are normal...some I have are 180o rotated. Neat tokens to be sure....as for value...under $1. CWtokenman might be by to help sometime soon...he knows lots more than I do about such things. Speedy
My father saved a lot of these in the 1930's and I have them in a tea jar. Some are metal, some are plastic. Pretty interesting.
Here's a New Mexico token with a die crack across the reverse. In fact all of the New Mexico ones I have seen have that die crack on them.
You all have sparked my interest in tax tokens. I've got a roll of Missouri Tax Tokens. Some plastic and some metal. Didn't know there were so many out there from other states. Never see them listed on coin dealers web sites and never see them at coin shows. I go to about 2 coin shows a month around here and have either never noticed them or they just aren't there. Also, not listed in any coin books I have. However, not a big accumulator of coin books. Just one more thing to go looking for now.
There are a total of 12 states that had Tax Tokens....as for a book...I've only heard of one good one and it goes for abotu $100. Speedy
I just picked up an interesting one a couple weeks ago. It is a 1/5 cent sales tax token from Tenino Washington made of wood.
Hi, These were actually used to give change for sales taxes. Here is some good info on the basics of their function. http://users.pullman.com/fjstevens/tokens/taxinfo.html Have Fun, Bill
I didn't think I would be interested in an article about the tax tokens since I was there using them. However, I did learn a lot from that article so thanks lots for the info, foundinrolls. Didn't remember there being a variety of colors so ran and looked at mine and sure enough there are green and red ones. Sure wish I saved more of them when I was a kid but my relatives kept on insisting that they were made to be used, not saved by some kid as a toy.
