For some reason I am having the hardest time finding information on these particular coins. I have the Gold James Garfield $1 coins and almost everyone has a flat spot on the edging but I can't find any information about it. They are almost in a crescent shape or a half oval on the edges, it isn't flat and smooth but looks to be 'lumpy' for a lack of better terms. Some also have slits and cuts on the edging, I wish I had a good camera to show you how it looks. I know this is a terrible pic, I really do, but the part which looks like it is a glare is the 'flat spot' of the edge. The shape is the right shape but you can't see the texture it has. Anyone know anything about these coins?
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like PMD to me. Maybe somebody just dropped the roll on a hard floor and put a flatness to them. It doesn't sound like a real error to me but maybe someone else will chime in here.
I was just looking again and I noticed, at least 3 of the "slits' or cuts are through the B in E Pluribus Unium. I wish to goodness I had a better picture, I can't explain it well enough I don't think....lol Also, they aren't flat...they sink in just like cutting a little piece out of an apple...(best way I can think to describe it) It is very odd. Some are big and others are quite small.
I just found one with a strike mark through the E on the edging. I am taking a pic of this one with something, it looks neat!
Okay, The first ones are of the E Strike through and then the second pics are of one with a 'cut' or whatever you all it with the star clearly visible, showing it wasn't just chipped in circulation or something, if it were just a chip then the star would be gone as well. Right? I hope these are somewhat better. On the first E strike ones, you can also see an area where another "gash" or "nick" or whatever it is called, is at. Ok now these are the others, I hope you are able to click those to make them bigger...lol I have more pics but I could only attach 5 per post it said.
Here are pics of the Second coin from the previous post. You can see the 'spot' better and the first two are just showing the view of the coin from front and rear.
It may have happened at the mint, but none of it happened during the minting process. It's damage, not minting error. Plain clear and simple.
Since several coins are affected the same way, it looks like it may have been damage by the edge lettering machinery at the mint. That might be classed as a minting error, in a sense, as it's part of the minting process. In any case I don't think it would be worth a premium on the coins, maybe the opposite.
where can I find a james garfield coin with proof of a mint error I can't seem to find one at all anywhere
