Is my 1984 Lincoln Penny with "O" stamped above the word "Liberty" an error? Started looking at some coins and noticed this one had the "O" mint mark stamped above the word liberty, instead of below the date. I cant find any pictures of a 1984 online with this same stamping. after closer observation(with magnifying glass" the mark is perfectly raised like a mint mark and looks more like a "D"
thats post mint damage.. and they stopped using the "o" mint marks many years before the coin was struck. now if abe had a doubled earlobe youd be onto something
OK...I'm not an error collector so please wait until a real one chimes in...BUT, I think I've read about coins that have these "floating mintmarks". I could be thinking of something completely different, but I wouldn't throw it away as PMD (Post Mint Damage) just yet. Wait for a few more opinions.
Here's a thread from 2005 that touches on this subject... http://www.cointalk.com/t5019/ In the response, cdb1950 talks about the Mint Marks being hand punched prior to 1982 and mentions that the Mint went from punching the mint marks to placing them on the hub after that. I recall reading an article (in Coin World I believe) that talked about these mint marks braking free and producing dies with rogue mint marks. These errors are normally caught before any coins are actually produced. I'm trying to recall an article I "may have read" about a class of coins I don't collect...so I could be completely wrong. I'm just saying, don't spend your coin just yet. I'll go through my old magazines and see if I can find the article. When it comes to Coin Talk's "PMD Parrots"...trust, but verify.
to me it looks like an Upside down D. Now I'm no expert, but I do collect errors. I would hang on to that one before you mark it as PMD. See if you can get one of the experts on here to comment about it. Just adding my 2 cents.
Die Split??? Hello all, I have two pennies (1983, 1984) that have a mark coming from the corner of the Lincoln Memorial to the edge of the coin. Are these errors?
this is what our newer cents looks like when the zinc core starts to rot under the thin copper plating. I have seen these darn things so bad they would have numerous swelled up areas and sometimes the coins get's so bad they just fall apart and turn to dust from the zinc rot. so I agree with Harley.d
I have a 1984 and under the mint mark there appears to be something like a 4 and some arrows somebody help
They only way we can determine what you have is if you create your very own unique thread with pictures. I have a feeling that it could just be PMD - Post Mint Damage
OK it is deeper than I though. There is a hole mid beard with a man and a woman. Also there appears to be a halo on the upper last arm on the Y in liberty Will post a few more photos in a minute
Hi. 1984 Cents are Copper Plated Zinc. There are a number if issues that arise because of the plating. What you have are Plating Bubbles. When exposed to the elements the stuff on your Cent occurrs. I want to share this webpage with you explaining Zinc Deterioration http://www.error-ref.com/zinc-deterioration-on-lincoln-cents/ Not true errors but after mint damage Aka PMD - Post Mint Damage
Well I don't think so explain the halo on your oface liberty and explain what is going on under the mint. Oh yeah there's is also something under his chin. Now I took pictures at different times and angles look what I was exposeed. Oh oh by the look at the D D on the E in WE
My friend.. I did explain. If you don't want to accept it then that's your problem. I have been collecting errors for over 30 years and what you have is just garbage.
