Hi! Today I picked up this beautifully toned 2 1/2 Guilder from 1960. It has a fingerprint on the obverse. Is it still considered uncirculated? That's what I bought it as. Also, does the toning look natural? Just wondering. Thanks! Ben
I agree, it sure can! It might limit it or possibly take away a point. I'm not sure on that though. Nice cent robec. The fingerprints never bothered me on coins.
I've seen plenty of Morgan dollars with fingerprints on them that were graded by the TPG's as MS. Chris
I'm not entirely sure the coin is UNC, even without the prints. I'm seeing softness/wear on the bun and crest both.
Thanks for answering my question guys! Does anyone else have input as to whether it looks UNC? Thanks! Ben
Truly "Uncirculated Coins"..............never leave the US Mint. BUT, uncirculated does not mean that the coin hasn't been spent in circulation. What it means is that there is no visible "wear" on the coin as the term is used to describe the "condition" of the coin, not whether or not its been spent. Therefore, finger prints are acceptable as long as they are not too distracting. What I mean by that is, on uncirculated coins, finger prints may not be too obvious until the coin sits around for a while. The oils which "cause" the finger print, react with the coins surface causing the print to "appear". This could occur after grading.
lol. I can see you sitting in a poorly lit room in a velvet wingback chair puffing on a pipe in your tweed sports jacket, contemplating how you'll bring down the scoundrel who would dare touch a coin. My god, it's like you're the Sherlock Holmes of numismatic foulery!
Personally I see it as still in MS, but distracting, your coin shows slight bits of wear, I'm still getting the hang of grading, I'd say MS62-63, the chin and bun are distracting, the chin more so IMO.
Thanks for the ballpark idea! The pictures I uploaded are horrible, when I get home in a couple of days (on vacation) I'll scan it. Then maybe you's'll get a better idea of it's condition. P.S. I know you's'll is grammatically incorrect, but I hate that there isn't a plural for "you" in English, so "yous" will have to do. It's so much nicer when they have você and vocês, etc. (English is my only language but I love language.)
The rules of grammar (many times) cease to exist around these parts, as evidenced by this old sod. I like to think of things such as this as a sort of illiterary license.........
Not a fingerprint, but funny story: I once had a guy return a coin because there was a small hair on the INSIDE of the NGC slab. It was like an arm hair! Haha! He said, "I can't resell it that way! THERE'S A HAIR IN IT!"
