I have seen several pictures of 1943/2 nickels online but I still can't seem to be able to see the 2 underneath? What are the most easily identifiable characteristics of this coin?

crud - yeah, I used to have detailed pic's up on VN but I just found out that I deleted them some how...

Try these - also note that the 1 has a doubling on the top.

I chased one of these for a while and gave up trying to cherry one. Now that I have a gem set of Jeffy's, I think I'll just buy one outright.

I also plan on a Jeffy RPM book and some more research material. Never cared for them untill I spotted those 2 gem sets in SoCal recently, my interest has definatly been perked:eat:

Speedy's photos are of the real thing. But beware of ones that are the result of a die gouge on the 3. Look at the enlarge photo of the date on this auction. Notice how the metal coming off the bottom serif of the "3" points to the middle arm of the 3 rather than lower ( between the middle and lower arm) like in Speedy's photos. There seems to be as many of these on ebay as the real one. At one show years ago, 5 dealers had a raw one and 2 were real and 3 weren't.

Great news, I had never heard of the doubling on the 1 . Jeff expert I am not, and you just have improved my knowledge. Thanks Jim and Speedy.

Here is a close up photo of an MS65 1943/2-P. The "2" is readily apparent with a loupe.

I found this one in a roll I bought on ebay

Not sure if it's the 1943/2 though...

Harry, did you find out if this was the 1943/2 version? I have one that looks almost identical except that the bottom of mine is straighter on the 3, instead of rounded. My 1 and 9 look odd as well.

Harry's is the die crack version.

    The 2 should be straighter.

Thank you Treasurehunt. I have one that is kinda worn and was trying to figure out which version it might be. I'll create a separate thread.

I have 1943 d, and the color is not grey but green, looks almost uncirculated

I know this is a old thread and I find it very useful information for the newer collectors so they can know what to look for

Mine is worn but it's easy to spot. The key is the tail of the 3. It shouldn't have a tail but it always Point up to the center of the 3.

Thanks very much for showing us the photo .If I had that one in question in hand I could know instantly if it was one the 43/2 coins after seeing your photo and other photos today. I'm really good at learning a die variety really fast. does your coin have a split serif on the right side of the bottom of the 1 in the date? I know that after being in circulation some of the doubling marks in the date would be worn off . After taking another look at Avery's photos and from his description I'm thinking even more he may have the right thing. But it would be impossible to say for sure from just the photo of a dirty circulated coin. These new lap tops sure do make a big difference with seeing coin photos from the cell phones and the older computers.
