I plucked this 1900 Indian head penny out of a roll tonight. I also found six wheats, the oldest one a 1920, out of maybe 5 rolls total. I opened the roll that the Native American cent was in and looked through it and put it in the second register. Later in the night I decided to go through the pennies again, and spotted the tell tale reverse of the Indian head penny. I don't know how I missed it the first time, but I'm glad I decided to look again. This is the second Indian head penny that I've found in circulation in my life, and the second one I've found in 2014. Hopefully it won't be the last.
You have to keep searching cents, and lots and lots of them. I never found an IHC in the first four years of searching, and then about 4 years ago I found a 1901. Since then I have found 15 of the little darlings. And then last week found the 1858 FE cent.
Hi. I found an Indian Head Penny from 1900 today for the first time. I couldn't stop smiling. How do you figure out the value. The condition looks a lot like yours.
The one FE I found was in a customer wrapped roll, the other one in a bank wrapped roll meaning it must have slipped into a coin machine somewhere. I counted my Indians from circulation and now have 29 of them from 1871-1907 and the two 1858 FE cents.
I was making fun of the PC police. I was also making a sarcastic remark because Oklahoma Indians prefer to be called "Indians" and usually not "Native Americans".
I haven't found any Indian Head pennies but I did receive a 1912 penny in change from a Safeway store several years ago.
It appears that two of the OP's pennies had been painted red at some time. I read that travelling carnivals would carry painted pennies to circulate as a sort of advertisement.
While I have a few IHC's, only one was obtained in a circulation. Was a 1908 If I recall. I usually snag a wheat cent every couple of weeks in change. Most of the time it's a 1950's era cent, but every now and then when I get a pre-1930 cent I do a little happy dance. I have hundreds of 40's and 50's wheats....but my supply of 1909-1929 is quite limited from circulation
