Hello I have recently been buying any good deal on silver . Today I picked up 3 roll's of 40% silver half's & 1 roll of 90% silver half's ! My question is this how many 40% silver half's does it take to = 1 pound of silver ? I am a Morgan dollar collector but I got a gut feeling this last month to start buying scrap/funk silver ( hope it goes well ). Thank you all as usual at CoinTalk ! Doug
This page only calculate silver content and 108 coins would be 15.9725 "troy" ounce of "Silver". Not coin weight. By my Calculation of a single 1966 Kennedy weighing in at .4 oz, I figure 40 coins would bring it up to 16 Avoirdupois ounces or 1 lb. Basically 2 rolls. But hen......1 pound of Silver? 108-109 coins at 15.9725 troy ounces is way more than a troy pound of silver. Silver and gold are measured in Troy Ounces and Pounds where 12 Troy ounces equals 1 Troy Pound. 81 40% Kennedy Half dollar would be just about 1 troy pound of silver. (11.9794 troy oz)
He did ask for how many would add up to 1 pound of silver... It depends if he wanted the answer to the question he asked, or the question he meant to ask.
I asked it that way to get BOTH answers (1)12oz.troy pound / (2) 16oz pound ! There you sit uncorrected.
Thank you I really do appreciate that ! I come to CoinTalk to ask/show my coin & I really do enjoy the fact that I can talk about a 1895 Morgan or a 1965 Jefferson Nickel & I most of the time get a honest opinion & that's why I am a member ! Doug ( Kent WA. )
Redbook sez a 1965-1970 half weighs 11.50 grams. Avoirdupois (NOT Troy) pound contains 454 grams. Therefore, 39.5 coins weigh one pound. Does not seem like a useful calculation, but it's what you asked. Each coin contains (Redbook again) 0.1479 Troy ounce of silver.
