I'm willing to go to the bank today and purshase 10$ worth of pennies which is a good start (10$ = 1000 pennies). but how do I ask them? Do I ask, "Can I have wheat penny rolls" or "Can I have penny rolls" ??
First and for most, it should go without saying, always be very polite. I always quickly explain that I'm a collector of coinage and explain that I search rolls for a hobby. I'll ask if they have any rolls that look hand rolled or better quite old. As a rule I usually get good responses and mostly they will really try to accommodate me, and this is at banks I don't have an account with. If I get a particularly friendly teller I like to explain to them about the silver that they may see, as a thank you. Some tellers have explained to me that they have coin collector friends that they notify when they come across the good stuff, rolls of silver. Good Luck and Keep on Collecting!!! Allen
You ask for wheat penny rolls they'll probably just look at you funny, and probably won't have them anyway. Though sometimes wheat pennies sneak into rolls, especially if they're "recycled" rolls (rolls filled with coins collected from circulation, not filled with fresh ones from the Mint) so it's worth searching, which I assume is what you're trying to do. I still find them in circulation, ocassionally. Just ask for normal rolls and you might get lucky. I filled a good portion of my Whitman Lincoln cent folders this way (how my grandmother got me started in coin collecting!). If you can convcince them to give you rolls that look older or hand-rolled, your chance of finding older stuff is better, though less and less banks have these it seems, from my experience. (A lot of banks don't accept hand-rolled change and instead use coin counting machines.)
"I'd like $10 in pennies please. New ones if you have 'em." Edit: don't use big coin collector terms with the tellers or they will look at you like you sprouted an extra head, instead refer to coins as 'old' or 'funny looking' or 'new' Being friendly and finding friendly tellers will get you very far in the world of roll searching. If your banks tellers are hostile you may want to look for another bank to acquire roles and deposit them at the hostile bank(assuming there's a coin counting machine that you can use free of charge.) Last time I went in and asked for some dollar rolls and I was asked if I wanted susan b anthony, sacajawea, or martin van buren, dollars before she ran off to the vault to get them. I got the van buren rolls but I wonder now if those susan b anthony ones were uncirculated 1999 rolls...
Yes, just be polite and see if they have any rolls that customers brought in. The ones from the mint in the plastic are usually no good for wheats but you can still find error coins in them which are fun to grab. Good Luck and have fun with it.
I just went into the bank today and got 2200 pennys. You just have to make sure to mention you collect coins, and they usually have no problem with it.
Just got in and ask for a number of cent rolls.. or ask for a Box. that is $25. Cheap fun. My favorite line to feed to tellers when they ask why I want them, is "They make great poker chips"
