Ok, I don't know what I am going to collect yet, but I am thinking about Peace dollars. And ever since I read about high reliefs I have always wondered what they look like.

So, what is the difference between a high relief and a low relief. I already Know what the low relief looks like because I have a 1922 that my grandpa gave to me because he didnt want it anymore. That was the only coin he had left.

Higher relief is just that Stainless....higher relief. Peace Dollars have a characteristic of low relief meaning that the detail of the coin is not well refined making the coin look as if it were weakly struck. The high relief variety shows a much stronger strike with much better detail.

Not exactly. If the '21 Peace dollar is well struck then yes I agree. But most are not well struck, most '21s are weakly struck. And several date and mint combinations of the lower relief are very well struck providing much more detail than the high relief examples.

In simplest terms stainless the inner design of the relief stands up higher than the rim of the coin. With the low relief the inner design is lower than the rim of the coin. This why they changed it from high relief to low relief. The high relief coins would not stack one on top the other without falling over. The low relief coins will stack and not fall over.

If you have a 1921 Peace dollar, it is a high relief. Compare it to another from the series and you'll see the differences.
