I have it on ebay right now and i have had 3 people tell me what a scumbag I am for trying to sell it. If its fake I will pull it ASAFP.

In all honesty, I think there is a good chance it is a fake. Compare it to these genuine examples. See the difference between the 8 and 0 of your coin and the genuine coins ?

And there is only 1 die variety for this date.

I all honestly I cannot tell the difference between the genuine 8 and 0 then yours, other then the ware so Its going to look a little different.

On the coins Doug shows the bottom loop of the 8 are round , yours are kinda oval .

Have you weighed it ? Also now that I'm looking more closely it's kinda wierd how the reverse has so much less wear than the obverse . I'm leaning towards fake now .
    sorry . Hope I'm wrong .

    That coin is fake.

    Edit to add:

There is only one variety for the 1809 capped bust dime, and yours does not match up with the correct diagnostics. All one needs to do to tell is compare the pictures in Doug's post to yours. Look at the star pointing at the headband, and also compare where the stars point in relation to the dentils.

I'm curious how you obtained this piece...After thinking more about it I decided to do a little investigating and it's not a contemporary counterfeit...It's a modern day replica from China.

Edit to add a picture of your coin:

I'm not puzzled at all, that coin hasn't been in a can since the 60's :D

I agree. Doug's examples show that the bottom right point on the left top star is pointed towards the bottom of the band (what's it called) with Liberty on it, while that point on the same star point to the top of the band.

    Oops, thats what he said.

An interesting post at CU Forums said that if it's genuine, it is a die variety that has not been reported. Food for thought.

Yeah the diagnostics match IMO. Probably just a later die state.
