    Hey everyone,

I am trying to get help with this awesome new coin and many others from 1790's to 1900's gold and silver rarities found in an old safein an old laundromat being demolished. I want to know what the potential grade might be and how toning can be so dramatically different from coin to coin and how that affects the piece and the lacking luster of some of them and what causes it. I see all colors going through the color spectrum on this coin as they should one would think not skipping colors in the order of colors. On this coin, the colors change in order like it should, like the purples going into blues, then dark blues and then into dark black tones and from ..blue to lighter purple to Orange and gold going from shade to shade which makes sense to me with how it was stored. I am new to toned coins this is my first. There were three 1884 S Morgan Dollars in the safe with the others not toned at all and prooflike that i will post soon. I will post more later, but for now let me know what you think on this one. This is strictly for educational needs on my part to help me understand how toning works and how grading works with toning and overall luster and what not. Thanks much. 20190227_201411_HDR.jpg 20190227_201118.jpg

At first glance, the toning looks artificial to me. What was it stored in? Certain old papers could possibly create this type of toning, but I’m suspect.

Edited to say that some laundry detergents can also cause this color. Given where it was found, that is my best guess.

Soi found out that it matches Vam 2 on vamworld. The S is tilted right and set to the left which if verified means the coin is authentic.

The toning has a creamy painted look to it. Seems off

The back has some more luster remaining than the front, butyeah the paper it stored in must have affe had it badly

It does look unnatural, but @Kirkuleez could be correct.

I hear ya. The way they were all found together and with others not toned and prperly stored that I don't believe it is artificial, but i understand why you would think it.

Yeah i think Kirkuleez is right. I got many other coins from it that are near perfect and stored differently in bags and some in holders flips etc. I got a nice prooflike from the safe too that is maybe unc and strong prooflike with no toning on it. Idk it is interesting discovery

I'm afraid the toning is unusual enough that the coin may not be considered "market acceptable." Hard to guess the grade too since the luster doesn't show, but I'll take a shot at MS63.

I'm sorry, there is no way that coin is NT. The blotchy spotting on the obverse, the color spectrum going from blue right into yellow is wrong. This coin looks exactly like something from edynamicmarketing on ebay (goes by Orlando mint now). Morgans don't tone that way. Somebody messed with it.

Oh and just out of curiosity, what does it weigh?

Yeah I’m not a huge fan of the color. Shame that’s how it came out.

The coin is not uncirculated and it is artificially toned, IMO.

I agree. Damaged by a moist environment.

Yes, someone posted this legend on eBay to promote their coins. Sounded like bull.
