Can anyone tell if this 1883 Hawaiian Hilo dollar is real/worth anything? I would like to know specifics if you have an idea.
If you mean real as in "Kingdom of Hawaii" Dala (dollar) and if it says Hilo on it then it isnt real. The reverse should only have the motto "ua mau keea oka aina I kapono", the kingdoms seal, 1 and D and Akahi Dala. The Obverse should only have the words Kalakaua I King of Hawaii and the date and his bust. There were 500,000 minted in silver and 18 minted in copper. Of the silver 453,652 were redeemed. Can you post a bigger pic? Im kinda guessing that if it says Hilo on it then it is probably a reproduction as a souvenir coin for the Town of Hilo or maybe even a token to commemorate something from the Big Island.
Owen, Im not sure what you mean by "what is in past post". Are you saying you dont have the coin and someone else asked the question some where else?
I meant that it has all the inscriptions you said in the 2nd post in this thread. my bad. I do have the coin.
Owen: I believe it is a reproduction. Is this coin silver? I cannot be positive but the Hawaiian Dollar coins I saw I believe did not have any stippling on it(the bumpy surface). It should be about the size of a Morgan and the weight is 26.7300 g. I know they made a lot of reproduction pennies and in the same color as the coin you show but for your sake I do hope I am wrong. I would suggest that you contact the Hawaii Numismatic Society....I think they have a point of contact via email. Edit: Just checked the website and they only have email to the webmaster. Try contacting him. Also it is the Hawaii State Numismatic Association vs what I wrote above. If you are unsuccessful, email or PM me and I will try to find a source for you. http://www.hawaiicollectibles.org/
