Hello, I have acquired a coin, and I am not sure what it is. At first glance, it appears to be one of the new Guam territory quarters; however, the images and text are different from the normal coins. It has no mint mark, and is dated 2008 instead of 2009. The images on the obverse are totally different from the circulated coin. The image of George Washington is not right, and there are no ridges on the edge of the coin and it appears to be made of a single metal. I was wondering if it was an idea for the new quarter? If anyone has an idea, I would be most interested in listening. It doesn't seem like a striking error, more like a sample. I will try to post an image if anyone is interested. Thanks for your time and attention!
Could be some sort of fake or game piece. We can't tell without a photo. Please post GOOD photos of the coin.
Welcome to the neighborhood! It sounds like it might be a medal produced by one of the private mints, but we would need good photos to know for sure. Chris
Hello, thanks for responding. I think my camera died, so these are the best I can do for now. On the front the text says (forgive me I don't know the "coin lingo") "GOD BLESS AMERICA UNITED STATES" and "LIBERTY" beneath George's chin. His head is wide not well detailed. It does not say quarter dollar anywhere on it. On the reverse at the top it says "GUAM" and has "1898" printed directly underneath. The regular quarter only has "GUAM" on top then underneath it says "E PLURIBUS UNIM 2009". On this other coin, the reverse image is totally different: the boat is differnt and on the opposite side, there is no image of Guam, but there are flowers and possibly a waterfall? There is also not an image of the acrhitectural support, as on the circulated quarter. Sorry about the image quality, but I'd love to hear any other comments! Thanks!
I believe it is a medal, not a coin. From the crude design, it probably was not produced by one of the better private mints and is not worth much. Chris
Thanks for for the info, it makes sense. I did not realize mints made things like this that looked so similar to current coins. I acquired this as coin change, so I'm not out $. I appreciate your help. Have a blessed day!
