Got an interesting email from China

I received the following email, addressed directly to me, from a company in China that has probably been partly responsible for the sprinkling of fake numismatics around the world. I rarely receive solicitations from businesses that I haven't initiated by signing up for something, so this was a little surprising.

My question: What was the point of this solicitation?

Hopefully my assumptions about them are wrong, and that they are not involved in making fake collector coins.

I've gotten several emails of this type. They are hoping to root out the rotten ones among us... simple as that.

I would strongly suspect that you're on the Contacts list of someone who got their email compromised, and that address was sold to some concern specializing in spamming numismatic end users. It's happened to me a bunch of times over the years at my Moderator emails. Or, some site you shared that email in the past with went rogue down the road and sold it to a spammer.

All I ever get are the clowns from MyLife telling me someone may have accessed my background info. Oh no! Not that! What? Do they actually think I have a life?

Alibaba's role in selling counterfeit merchandise -- and not just only coins -- makes Ebay's look like a mere oversight by comparison.

Are you kidding my? DELETE IT ! It's called Phishing! I wouldn't worry about it, if Beijing has OPM's and Hillary's e-mails they have yours. Don't click on anything you don't know. I wouldn't cut and paste that stuff into this forum.

Maybe so. But I don't see any counterfeits in the link from the original post. Lots of people use the term commemorative coin for medals too ...

That's true. But in all due respect, I have to doubt anything that looks American is being produced in China to honor the U.S.

Honor, nah. But a successful product certainly "inspires" others. And unfortunately the line between inspiration and imitation is still crossed fairly often ...

It's sad but all you need is one fish to bite to spread the 'disease'. Counterfeiters don't have to get their hands too dirty with the 'counterfeit runners'.

All, in response to a report by a member, I visited the site that mlov43 received the original email from, and unless someone has specific complaint, I see it as just an advertisement from a international sell location of challenge type of coins, refrigerator doo-dads, etc. Lucas has his photo there and contact info. Lucas we are extremely concerned about counterfeits and illegal copies, so suspicions were high. Any of us who has a web presence usually have an email address on the 'contact page'. Lucas, if you are a coin collector also, please feel free to post on them. I take your post as to mean that you do not make copies of real coinage of any country. There are several members who have shown challenge coins who would probably be interested. The rules for selling are in the classified areas of the forum as we allow only a small amount to occur, leaving that to ebay and others. Jim

So, as a business-person in China, what can you tell us about Chinese counterfeits we may not already know?
