Can anyone tell me if this gold colored cent in the middle is worth anything. And perhaps tell me if they know why it is like that. I think maybe it has been gold plated or something.
Thanks, I have looked at it through a microscope, and I can't see anything that would make it a double die. I have looked through hundreds of thousands of pennies and I have never seen one like it. If it toned like that naturally, that would be pretty cool.
that's exactly what happened the copper tarnishes and tones. That OR the coin is a counterfeit double die or just of the regular to fool someone back when the 1969s double dies where discovered.
No, it is not a DDO. It could be a thin coating of zinc which is fused to produce a brass color on the surface. Commonly done in chemistry lab. See http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/a/goldsilverpenny.htm
Hi Tinna.... These old threads often do not get much attention. What I can tell you though is that many, many of these are plated either for inclusion in curio displays or even high school science experiments. Likely that your cent is a plated cent.
There are actually two 1997-Ds. You probably have the one that was inadvertently struck on the yellowish brass-plated planchets. The normal ones were struck on the reddish copper-plated planchets.
To show you, @Tinna, does it look like this? It's the brass one. It's worth slightly more (operative word, "slightly")...
