Friday Whatzit #2: ca. 1890s Argentina / USA mule ($10 eagle imitation - gaming token?)

Appears to be a gaming token, counter, or Spiele Marke piece, since I see no other way a muled Argentina/USA mashup like this could occur.

Probably circa 1890s, from the style of the portrait. The "heads" side closely resembles the Libertad (Liberty) heads on Argentine coins of the period. Ditto the USA side, though artistic liberties were taken with both sides and the tall lettering font is a bit unusual.

So not a product of either the Argentine or US Mint, surely. Almost certainly a privately made jeton/token/counter fantasy of some kind.

But old. And UNC, or nearly so. Semi-prooflike, too. Quite lovely.

Anybody have any more specific information? Thanks.

Sorry I'm posting only animated GIFs here. The focus was so wretched on the stills I took that I discarded them. I also forgot to weigh and measure this one before it went back into my SDB, but it's approximately quarter-sized (or $10 gold eagle sized, come to think of it).

Struck in some kind of bronze or brass alloy, I suppose.

Nice write-up, I think this is probably the best and most accurate info one will find online for such pieces :)

  4. In Spanish, but they agree with your 1890-1900 date range and refer to them as gaming tokens/spielmarks. They list other denominations as 5D and 2-1/2D There are a couple for sale, one on Etsy, one on eBay, both priced about $49.
