    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the numismatic hobby. My question has to do with the product that the Franklin Mint puts out. I subscribed to the Presidential Dollar Completion Program. They release the four Presidential dollar coins each year. You get the 24-carrot gold plated coins plus the bonus platinum JFK & Reagan dollars for free w/ a free Cherry wood case for display.

Any thoughts on this program? & If you've purchased any product with the Franklin Mint were you happy with it, would you buy from them again?

This was my first purchase with coin collecting I have since bought Presidential dollars from the U.S. Mint. Proof sets and rolls.

    Any input is appreciated!

    Thanks...

If you want to collect the moderns, you should really stick with the U.S. Mint...at least, even if you're paying a little more up front, you'll know that it's the "real thing"...not some "knock off".
    Good Luck !

i'll be a little more blunt -- don't buy anything from the franklin mint. it's garbage. if you like a particular product they make, then great, go ahead and buy it. but don't expect to be able to sell your plated coins down the road to a coin collector -- they wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

the franklin mint specializes in the manufacture of "collectibles." on the numismatic front, since they're a private organization unaffiliated with our government, they can only do "aftermarket" alterations, in this case electroplating the coins with a tiny layer of gold. no coin collector would want coins altered by a third, non-government party.

if i were you, i'd cancel my order and get my money back, post-haste.

I think that says it all.

In aprox. 1990 I bought a 1 pound silver Kennedy Half for $90 - It looks great and is fun to hold a pound of shinny silver in your hand but probably isn't worth much more than the silver content. My wife bought me the gold plated quarters just a little after we were married - I probably couldn't give those away to a dealer if I needed money.

Basically already said here. Cancell your order. Nothing really bad about them it's just that they produce STUFF that has little to no resale value. Actually some of their STUFF does look nice but that's about it, just nice. You will never get rid of their STUFF unless you give it to the Salvation Army as a tax write off.

    dollarcoins4fun ,

Glad you asked this question although the replies may not be what you wanted to hear. They are honest replies though.

In the past I bought a lot of Franklin Minst stuff from my local coin dealer. A lot of sterling silver that I paid spot price for. This means he paid less than spot (believe me he made a profit).
Some of it was actually very attractive. I sold most of it on ebay as silver started going up. All I wanted was spot price but occasionally I'd get a decent premium out of luck. Someone really liked the design so they'd pay a bit more.

Bottom line is that basically the stuff has no numismatic value. Franklin Mint stuff (and others like it) is very collectible until you sell it. Then you find out the hard way.

    Thanks everyone!

I think I see the light now. I'm glad I have been purchasing from the U.S. Mint with the subscriptions that they offer. I still have a lot to learn about the hobby and I will, if I keep participating in these forums.

You've educated me and then some...

Please read this entire thread. Purchasing from the Franklin Mint is not a good idea.

There are so many different ways to collect those coins at a much more affordable AND liquid manner.

Did you contact them and ask them why you didn't receive your last shipment & bonus?

The Franklin Mint, I didn't know they are still around. I remember when they first opened in Yeadon, PA. The company my father in-law worked for did a lot work for them.
Would I buy directly from them NO. If I saw something on the secondary market that I liked maybe if the price was right.
But don't fret all collectors make mistakes when collecting, take time read, learn, enjoy.

Heck, I still make mistakes. I just hope they don't cost me as much as some of my earlier mistakes.

You should buy modern commemorative coins from the US Mint. You'll never get your money back from private mints.

@dollarcoins4fun the Franklin Mint has actually made some circulating coins for some foreign countries. Their mainstay are lumps of attractive metal that will never be worth what you paid for it. As far as the US Mint, their products also tend to go down in the aftermarket.

I've seen quite a few foreign proof sets made by the Franklin Mint, for countries such as Jamaica. The base metal coins don't seem to carry much premium and I'm not sure if the silver ones are worth much more than melt. Regardless of current price I'm sure whoever bought them lost money.

I have never bought from the Franklin Mint but they have made some really cool looking stuff. The prices were always too much for me.
