Hi everyone. I wanted to buy gold but its so much $. So I started buying silver. Once I buy the basics.......the maple...wildlife.....ase.....id like to buy some gold. I see 1the gram is affordable. They even sell. 01 grams. Is this a waste or a good way to obtain gold for the "poor"? Thank you.

Why not just stick with silver? If you can't afford to invest in gold you can't afford it. Don't go buying small amounts just so you can say you own gold.

2 peso gold sold out at Provident, but you can get info on it there. If you're actually interested you could check the etailers as most of them offer better deals than you can find on ebay, unless you have unlimited time to wait for auctions to end.

If you decide to go ahead and buy fractional gold, then just watch the premium that you will pay for it since fractional gold coins tend to have higher premiums on them as opposed to a full 1-oz gold coin. If you can find fractional gold coins that are "ex-Jewelry", then the dealer might charge you a lower premium for it since "ex-Jewelry" pieces are damaged in that they have scratches, dents, or other defects that make it not "attractive".

I saw in the current issue of Scientific American, US money reserve in Texas was offering their introductory special--10 1/10oz. eagles for under $1700! Can pay with credit card. Can't beat the deal but you only get it once as a promotion.

:) Modern fractionals would be fine. However, Territorial fractionals from the 19th century can be expensive.

If you just want a small amount of gold, why not consider buying a common circulated quarter eagle. Such coins can readily be had at melt, and at least this way you can own something with a little history. Of course there is a lot of junk out there, but either take your time or find a trusted source. Sooner or later you can have a nice original coin for the price of bullion... kind of like the best of both worlds.

I love the Mexican two pesos, but for bullion purposes it is not a very good choice. Most cost about $100 each and the melt value as of today is $81.55. They are a little more than 1/20th oz. of gold content.

look at ducats for a smaller coin without too much premium. really you should just save 'till you can get bigger coins. $5 gold commems can be found for near spot. or Sovs or 100 balboa and others.

I think fractional gold is cool to have on top of silver. And maybe later on instead of spending 50 oz. of silver you can get your first ounce.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything less than a Pamp Suisse 1 gram unit. Don't mess with any of the other off brands until you know your way around. I started buying Dos Pesos Gold Coins but when I started they were only $50 each, look at them now. :D

Biritsh Soveriengs are nice, they're 1/4 ounce coins, and can be had for low premiums if you find a good dealer. I picked up a few a couple months ago for around $400 apiece when gold was hovering around $1575/oz, meaning only about a $25-30/oz peemium.

The 1/10 gold eagles are nice, but do carry a bit of a premium, I think last I saw some they were around $190-200 or so, which totals out to be about $2k/oz.

Small gold such as 1g pieces can have enormous premiums to spot built into them, which may seem rather small given the price, but when liquidated can come back and bit you.

If you have never seen a 1 gm gold "bar" I suggest heading to a coin show to have a look at one before making your purchase. "Bar" is misleading as it's extremely small resembling a shaped piece of foil that's smaller than an adult thumbnail. My recommendation is to keep your gold purchases at 1/10 oz (3.1 gm) or larger. Coins are better than bars when buying these amounts.

great advice, some folks don't realize how small some of these gold "bars" really are.

2 pesos are hard to beat IMO. They can be had for $3-$4 over melt and are a )relatively speaking) cheap way to get into gold. FYI- the little guys are addicting! At $70-$80 a pop when I was picking them up it didn't seem like much and next thing I knew I had 50 of them!!

I agree with you, imo the dos pesos is one of the cheapest ways to get gold in coin form.
