Gentlemen,I was happy to get 2 one dollar pieces dated from 1851 but checking it on some sites apparantly they don't exist? I have no possebility of sending pictures but the coins look like the ordinary 1$ pieces from 1851 on the back but the front shows an indian with Liberty in his feathers'hat and also there is the inscription United states of america. The indians head is the one of the later 2cents and a gold dollar. Are these real coins?????? Thanks for helping me out
Imean the gold dollar small indian head 1854/56 and the Large ind. Head1856/89 and the pennies 1859/1909
I don't know how to put it any more plainly. If your coin is dated 1851, and is a one dollar denomination, and has a bust of an Indian on it, then it is not a US Mint issue.
These are the two one dollar coins from 1851. If your's doesn't look like either one of these, then it is not a regular US Mint issue. 1851 Silver Dollar (click here) 1851 Gold Dollar (click here)
I think I know the piece that you mean. I have one. It is a fantasy piece. It never existed as a coin anywhere. As far as i'm aware (half asleep at the best of times) these were made in Germany in the seventies. Why? I hear you ask... well, I simply don't know. All I know is that about once or twice a year someone else comes across one and asks.....`is it real', and someone sadly has to burst their bubble with `sorry bud, but it is a nice looking paperweight'. If yours is anything like mine, it looks and feels very `soapy'. If it has any silver content (which I very much doubt), it is very low indeed. Ian
