Says 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN' round the edge instead of 'PLEIDIOL, WYF I'M GWLAD' It prob is a fake (very worn for a coin of this age)...I'm going to weigh it on some postal scales to compare it with a known real £1 coin to see how they match up. I saw some guy buying fake £1 coins for £4 each on a british coin website...so I might either keep this (it's quite cool)...or stick it on ebay.
Eddyk, For those who don't know, the 2000 1 pound has the PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD (True am I to my country) inscription. The following year, the pound coin featured the three lions design and DECUS ET TUTAMEN (an ornament and a safeguard) an old reference to the fact that this inscription was there to provide beauty and to prevent "clipping" from the coin. I have to say that the lettering on your photo looks a bit crude in comparison with the one from the stock photo you also posted. Here is it's companion pic next to yours for comparison.
Eddyk just to let you know mate there are quite a few fakes out there in circulation, I got one in change at a pub a while back and now use it for my shopping trolly LOL De Orc :kewl:
Steve,I have seen a very unusual fake 1 Quid coin, which had a very soapy appearance to it.My boss actually got it in change when he was in London a few years ago. Eddy,I always thought it was illegal to trade coin forgeries. That is certainly the case over here in New Zealand, unless the item is clearly described as a forgery. Aidan.
The inconsistent edge lettering (or reverse design) for the datwe is the giveaway with these fakes. I have a small collection of them. Some are good quality, such as yours. When I lived in Germany I had the Scottish guy in the office bring back some pound coins whenever he went home for a visit. I used them fro small ebay purchases from the UK, which were usually fake oiund coins I had bid on. One time, he gave me a fake in the coins he brought back. That cut out the middle man on that coin. I have heard that around 1% of pound coins in circulation are fake.
The one I had was of such poor quality it was not worth keeping in my oddities collection, but yes trading forgeries is a crime unless you are catagoricaly selling them openly as forgeries (Ie not for a dishonest purpose) LOL De Orc
